My first answer was actually wrong, it all depends on the carrier's Conditions of Carriage (CoC). Most transporters will limit their liability under their CoC, but if they do not (or do not inform you of their CoC) then you can claim for everything.
Did you sign any document pertaining to CoC?
(no giggling at the back!)
Most express haulier/man in van types will ask you to sign their CoC, and may give you the option of Goods in Transit cover (you pay for their risk essentially).

Wasn't aware of CoC or made aware. Never signed any agreement or was I asked to. Thanks for the info Richard, good for future transactions for myself and others :D

When I quote for transporting bikes around Europe ( www.eurovancourier.co.uk ), I struggle to compete on price with those who operate like this. My insurance costs £100/month, but covers anything non-hazardous under a general haulage policy. It also includes public liability insurance, business insurance etc, and is separate to the vans hire and reward insurance. Being legal and well covered isn't cheap. A lot of couriers take out the cheapest policy, which excludes certain items, but still transport those items in the hope they never have to make a claim.
Current bike is a Yamaha T7

Three of us rode from Bilbao to Alicante at the beginning of March to a meet up of K bikes, an annual event.

The plan, to leave them there and make occasional visits. Dropped them off to a very secure place in Villena [if anyone is looking for storage this is an option] on 9th March. and took a flight home that day. 11th March lockdown.

9th September had them brought back having decided next year is likely to be cancelled too and I had an issue on one bike here. £1,200 got us the 3 bikes picked up and dropped off to 2 addresses in Ireland, 45 hours door to door for mine. That's not a typo, 1am 8th September collected, 8pm 9th September its in my shed via Cherbourg to Rosslare.

Carrier included insurance but limited in value and its not normally included. It can cost too.

Specialised motorcycle couriers are more likely but not guaranteed to have insurance cover for your bike.

i shipped my busa back from spain in 2005 with a furniture removal company, they said they new what they where doing. anyhows back at their depo in warrington to pick the bike up and it had nearly been cut in half because the had strapped a rope across the tank, fairing and every bump had case the strap to grate across the panels and tank.

They said no problems and they had it repaired better than it was shipped out (well rode) the company was Roy Trevor and over time they have shipped a number of bikes but i wrapped them myself when i drop them off, well worth giving them a call in you are shipping to spain, the depo is just outside fuengirola and they were very inexpensive.
