.. and also, i notice that the definition is only about the same as my older phone cam, despite it saying it had double the megapixels.

The higher the ISO the poorer the picture quality. ISO 200 will give better photos (subject to lighting) than ISO 1600.

I have a Panasonic DMC FZ45 must be nearly 10 years old now, and it is my goto camera for everyday use, still on original battery and never lets me down, even the video is great quality.

Working for Motorola when camera phones first came out I loved this new feature, though it took some years before picture quality was really good enough, around 2008. I had already been through the SLR phase but lost the enthusiasm to carry all the gear and had switched to a compact.

The point being of course is that each of us has different views on what we are willing to carry. Most of my pictures these days are from a Samsung J5, which was a modest £125 new so if I break it it's not the end of the world. But it can take some really nice pictures:

Sits in your pocket unobtrusively, and even when locked you double click the screen button and the camera is there, in about 2 seconds!

But for holidays and shows I also take a Sony WX350, which is very small in your pocket but the 20x zoom lens is a useful feature.

Had a Lumix G5 for a couple of years and pleased with it, smaller than my DSLR but still fairly bulky. it does great 4k Video but I dont have the patience for video editing.
The Sony NEX 6 I had before was much easier to carry around and seemed to provide similar results as a stills camera with a decent lens, but I dropped it on a rock
Actually This has reminded me how good the NEX 6 Was I should look around for second hand one.
Its a trick............get an Axe
