Bug Out Bikes

Post by Asgard »

Right then , the Zombie Apocolypse is in full swing, you defended the homestead as best you could but it's getting out of hand, you have to head for the hills.
The roads are chocka ful of abandoned range rover evogues and BMW X3s. so a bike is probably the best option.

Ok so initially you have to go with what you got, but lets say you have a pick of dealerships on your route out of Hades, what you gonna loot?
something lean, fast with some throwovers and a rucksack or a Germanic Tank with a trailer and a years supply of frozen sauerkraut in the panniers?

This?

Or this?

Regardless of what you take fuel is the enemy  so peddle power wins hands down...a electric bike with regenerative braking to recharge batts is the answer...and a cross bow for food  ...

I wouldnt rush to leave the city as everyone else will so plenty of tasty snacks left behind..

Carnivores rule all them veggys with perish so more meat :D

The roads blocked
Bikes offer access with their manoeuvrability, but offer very little protection. And as pointed out fuel will become and issue.

Bicycle either electric or manual require input by you so the need for a high calorific diet. Also whilst good on flat surfaces any adverse terrain would be your downfall.

Personally a horse.
Able to access more areas than any of the above, carry more plus have a good turn of speed. Require little maintenance, just eat grass and gorse.
If the shit hit the fan then you could sacrifice the horse to horde of zombies whilst you made you escape,
Or you could eat the thing yourself. Being in the New forest there is an absolute abundance of horses just roaming free.

Its pretty good, apart from the white Bros usd forks which were absolute shite when fitted to downhill bikes weighing half what this machine does 10+ years ago, you can actually see that they are twisted in the picture.
Easily replaced though

Something like this would be my pick, fuel? well it sips the stuff, there would more than enough to keep you going just syphoning a car every 100 miles or so
and its light enough to SIMPLY pick up and chuck over the odd fallen GS1200 or KTM1290 littering the first 100 yards of trail :D

...........and on the occasion that you come across a stretch of clear motorway, ambush the next tin box, crossbow the driver and throw the bike on the roof for a few miles...hey its the apocalypse :P

Tried and tested in the zombie apocalypse by Daryl in The Walking Dead, a KTM525 EXC (RFS, circa 2005)

The Himalayan comes pretty close, or an early BM GS 650 twin with kick start. A BSA M20, when you look at what they survived in WW2 they should cope with the post Brexit apocalypse.
