Planning on doing a long distance hike in Western Scotland in a couple of weeks but starting to have second thoughts. Midge forecast isnt looking good.

Any Scottish locals on here that can comment on the current midge status, and predictions for in a couple of weeks.

Want to hike from Glenfinnan to Inverie.

Do you know about this forecast: https://www.smidgeup.com/midge-forecast/

Weather forecast can probably give a good idea as they won't like wet and windy.

Seems to work .... or try Avon skin so soft, make sure it is the "original " mix on the tube as the new stuff doesn't work.
Have a great trip

Cheers

thanks, yes seen the smidge forecast. Doesn't look good for the next 5 days. (3+ and probably worse where I want to go).

Thinking of postponing the trip for a month. Beginning of October should be midge free according to what Im reading.

Will be with the dog, so although I can cover up, he cant.......don't know how bad a dog would get bit?????? but the midges live off sheep and deer, so I don't see why a dog wouldn't be on the menu.

Anyway, shouldn't be a problem to push the trip back a month.

They only come out at certain times of the day, early morning and evening.

Currently in Inverness having just finished the NC500 and they weren’t too bad. Only actually noticed them once.

There's been too much wind around here recently (North of Ayrshire) for the wee buggers.

Never easy to say, but anywhere on the West where the weather is a light wind (under about 10mph) and damp, it will be a horror film in the making until the end of September.

Usually Ok around the coastline where the winds are stronger, but can be hell in a sheltered wooded area. Midge forecast is good, but your visor will tell you when they are out.

Ticks are getting more prevalent too, not really an issue in bike boots and waterproofs, but watch out if walking (and always check your dog over (if in a car))

Thanks and I'll hold you to it. Very strange weather today, who stole the clouds? Though it dropped from 27 deg C at the Schlod summit to only 19 in Inverness 😱😱
