Fantastic idea. I always remember me and my dad listening to the Smiths Greatest Hits on a trip around Europe in a van, so I'd suggest that.

Great stuff all, thanks to everyone whose posted so far.

Hard to believe but Sade is my next door neighbour! I'll see if she has a copy I can borrow.

And now, Harry, let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.

Moontan by Golden Earring , little known , but a fantastic rock album ( it's the album with Radar Love on it) which has most cerrtainly stood the test of time. Radar love is not even the best track. Make sure you get the European version ( big tree green sea/ are you receiving me) not the US version ( Just like Vince Taylor/ Suzy lunacy).
Have a look at the reviews on Amazon 76%@5*. It's as good as Dark Side in my opinion.

Bloody hell, where d'yer start?
Gotta have some Stones, and i'd go for Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Goats Head Soup, Exile On Main Street, etc,
and a bit of Joni Mitchell as previously suggested with some added Hissing Of Summer Lawns, Hejira, etc,
tough one mate, good luck.
