Couldnt agree more Let's stop the pettiness and wrangling for power and get it done with everyone.simonw wrote: ↑Thu Jan 17, 2019 9:36 amYesterday the BBC [media alert - take with a pinch of salt!] reported that: Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has now tabled a vote of no confidence in the government, which could trigger a general election."
Wouldn't have been refreshing to instead read: "Jeremy Corbyn has now offered the full services of the shadow cabinet to Theresa May to try to help secure the best outcome for the UK"?

Re: EU. In or out?
Well, I'd say that shows we do very well as members of the EU. Most of the UK's exports to non-EU nations are facilitated by agreements those nations have with the EU.garyboy wrote: ↑Thu Jan 17, 2019 5:06 am I find the most disconcerting thing about all this eu stuff, is the lies and misrepresentations

``Manufacturing contributes £6.7 trillion to the global economy. Contrary to widespread perceptions, UK manufacturing is thriving, with the UK currently the world’s eighth largest industrial nation. If current growth trends continue, the UK will break into the top five by 2021. In the UK, manufacturing makes up 11% of GVA, 44% of total UK exports, 70% of business R&D, and directly employs 2.6 million people.``

Jeremy Corbyn will never help the Conservatives to overcome this 'problem' as his sole aim is to get into power. Much the same as no Conservative MP will ever vote against the Government if there is a chance that doing so would lead to a Labour Government getting into power. It all about party politics rather than national interests .

You are right since the end of the 80s we've slowly regained our manufacturing base (although it seems grossly under reported). One of the main reasons we've done that is because we have the collective bargaining power of being inside a continent sized trading environment. Our modern car manufacturing plants were built as part of a EU wide business model. VW and Ford have just announced a collaborative electric van project that will probably need new factories. If the choice is a factory in the EU which is supported with a network of smooth running logistics or in a country with no trade agreements and a self destructive government were will they go?
I don't think that Europe is trying to keep us trapped, its only looking after itself, if Italy was trying to leave and we weren't we would be gladly looking after our own at their expense. Ultimately the only people keeping us trapped is the massive shower of bellends in Westminster.
I'm not saying we should stay in the EU, that ship has sailed. But we have to get our shit sorted.
And now, Harry, let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.

Re: EU. In or out?
Following on from Garyboy's post about manufacturing...the shape of British manufacturing has changed.
We used to make 'things'...particularly things that people could buy.
We don't make 'things' so much now.
Instead...we make parts of things.
this company is a good example
https://www.gkn.com/
There are very few motor vehicles or aircraft which don't contain GKN parts or technology.
The problem is, as a maker of parts we need to be well-connected with the rest of the world...particularly places like Germany and Italy which are relatively close by and have an insatiable demand for parts.
I'm not sure how leaving the Single Market is going to help with this.
And no deal means everything coming in or out has to be subject to WTO rules.
Some Brexiteers still don't grasp this...for instance they talk about a two-year 'transition period' in which the UK can negotiate new deals. But a no deal Brexit means there is no transition period. We are in...then out.

While the EU (Withdrawal) Act will convert EU law into UK law at the point of exit, it will also repeal the European Communities Act 1972, which is the primary means by which our trade agreements are implemented while the UK is in the EU. We therefore need to build a new legislative framework to ensure that transitioned trade agreements can be fully implemented within UK law and remain operable over time.``

tho some say this is just a wish list ..
http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/brexit/2017/11/3 ... wish-list/
and indeed our goverment itself seems to make it look complicated ..
https://www.gov.uk/government/publicati ... rexit-deal
but many think that `no deal` is just a bargaining chip with th eu .. a trump card .. tho JC cannot see this,
.. but the principle of freedom of our country, to rule itself in law, money, and borders, transcends all of this .......................... this is what remoaners cannot grasp.
