Murray Walker RIP

Post by Richard Simpson Mark II »

The voice of motorsports has passed away.

Although we associate him with F1, his real passion was motorcycles, and for many years he was the lead commentator for Grandstand 'Scrambles'

Quite a guy...commanded a Sherman tank in one of the last desperate battles in WWII Germany. Only started to work full-time as a commentator when he retired from advertising at the age of 60 (coincided with James Hunt becoming F1 Champ and the BBC deciding to televise every race). Son of a TT winner.

I shook his hand once when I won a journalism award.

Great man, great voice.

I bet he made a great voice for Scrambles before my time unfortunately. Word association, F1= Ferrari and Murray Walker in my mind anyway, R.I.P Murray Walker.

I think Clive James described him as a man who speaks in CAPITAL LETTERS

My personal opinion was and is that F1 is actually rather boring. But I loved watching it to hear the Walker/Hunt double-act.

A little-known fact about Hunt is that when F1 returned to what was still a segregated South Africa, Hunt asked if he could sit it out. He was told no, your contract obliges you to go. So he went. And gave his fee to a youth charity in Brixton. And there was no virtue signalling.

Didn't stop James Hunt racing at Kyalami though , Murray once had to be restrained from giving James a right hook because James snatched the only microphone off him Ah fond memories.Murray had more than his three score and ten and what appeared to be a grand time of it
He was so respectful and precise regarding his commentary re Senna's crash it was almost that he knew prior , as for his Murrayisms simply the best

James wasn't always an easy commentary partner...he used to pop out of the booth for a quick toke sometimes...and Murray would say...'James has just popped out to check weather conditions'
