Sorry to hear you are struggling to find a bike, but the 125 market is on fire at the moment, which may well mean that, at last, there's a resurgence of interest in motorcycling from people who aren't currently motorcyclists.

Couple of possibilities}

1} Fast-track him through his test on a riding-school 125, then buy a bike of a different size.

2) Buy a new 125, and sell it on after he's passed his test...they hold their values so well at the moment it wouldn't cost that much in real terms...the latter assumes of course that you've got the cash to hand, which you may not have. You would have to hold a gun to his head regarding keeping it nice though.

I remember being 17, if I had a dirt bike it would not have been for 'keeping it nice'.
And now, Harry, let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.

Maybe a bit tatty for you but I've seen one put to excellent use off road on a trails training day.

I've just had a chat with my Mrs and it looks like we've got a derbi terra adventure sat in the shed doing nothing if that's any interest, not strictly a trail bike but an "adventure" bike with bugger all mileage and less than the xr you missed out on.

Thanks for all the offers and suggestions

I went down to scary old London and picked up a 2011 wr125r for £2500 with included a decent jacket, helmet, 2 locks , original bill of sale, always helpful for a beginner) and a decent service history

Its only done 2500 miles, obviously you can never know for sure but it is on the original tyres, no signs of wear and tear, just a cracked but entirely useable fairing to sort out

I can even see us keeping it as a family, costing almost nothing to run in terms of tax/MOT/insurance/ MPG and servicing costs

Went for our first run this afternoon, and I have to say, even though my son is reasonably competent. it is absolutely horrible riding 20 metres behind him, thinking all the time "hope you've seen that tw@t who is about to pull out", "move into the middle of road" blah blah blah

It makes you realize how naturally defensive positioning, and a sense of self preservation, comes to you after 36 years of riding.

Happy days to come I hope

Thanks all

Greetings,

I hope that your son and you both get plenty of pleasure from your new purchase.

Totally empathise with the worried parent feelings, I tell my lad (who is coming up to his 40th birthday) that I only ride in front because I know where the lanes are :?

TTFN

Hugh.
