Tarps (ONLY) please ... Tents on another thread

Post by Monster »

Hello
Following on from a tent thread ... we need to see some tarp action here please
Perhaps what tarp(s) you have and how they are used - how heavy they are etc etc
I often check out other people's set up at rallies and get ideas from there ... so let's learn from each other

My tarp is just a cheap big square from an outdoor shop. It still works very well but originally I carried 2 steel poles that were too heavy
Here is a shot of it tied to some trees in Scotland. It was a Godsend however as it was a very wet rally in Aviemore
I often carry my flag as it gets people talking and asking where it is from ( Ontario in Canada BTW )

The same tarp can be set up many ways depending upon where you can tie it down - always slope to run any rain off
Obvious ... but sometime it is best to avoid learning things the hard way as it rains everywhere and sometimes when least expected
This was in Spain and it really rained hard one night. I was able to put some gear and bike behind the tent and under the tarp

I still use this tarp as it packs down small and is quite light - but I now carry fibreglass poles which can be bent to create a U shape
However I still have to get better at keeping the poles and/or guy lines away from the tent's door
The shot below was from a stop near Rutland Water. I was there one night and knew it would rain. A mate collected me and we had dinner
at a nearby pub. So the bike was not coming and going like it was in Spain. That set up lasted the best part of a week

I continue to learn from my own efforts but also from looking at others

Regards

When you do that sort of thing ... it must be quite warm I guess

I have a good sleeping bag and also 2 good sleep mats to choose from despite the fact I don't really get cold
But there you are very susceptible to cold coming up from underneath whilst you sleep
Also you must not leave any food about ... animals can visit in the night

I used to do canoe trips in Canada ... and there you tie any food up in between 2 trees and well away from the tent (bears)
You also do not clean fish near your campsite and clean up thoroughly after cooking and eating for the same reason

You Tube ... Joe Robinet if that sort of thing is of interest (he is very good and very watchable)

I like that setup. Good for strong winds in open area. What size tarp is it? Would 6'2 be able to stretch his legs? :D
