Ok,

On the old GS I currently I currently have a Givi PL189 pannier rack, I am getting everything in place for a up and coming trip this summer and I am after some soft adventure type panniers. Basically I have used Alu Hepco boxes in the past but sadly they halfway around the world in the Caribbean (Long story) and I am keep to get away from hard cases anyway.

I am looking at some panniers sub 300 quid (but fluid with this) if possible that have a tie strap attachment rather than needing a plate mounting to the loop. I see SW Motech do the Dakar pannier, anyone else have any experience with other systems?.

Sounds like the os base Kriega stuff is perfect for you. The 18ltr per side actually feels as big as my sw Motech stuff I had before which were 32ltr

A single camlock strap will hold them em, really good heavy duty large capacity panniers and the only ones i can get my full camping gear in etc
I just used the Touratech pannier frames and the bags sit well with the cam lock strap supporting the bottom.

Adventure spec--says so on the side?--anyway, I have the Lomo panniers and they to need a strap from the bottom pannier frame rail, under the base and then up and over the seat--stops them sagging--I use the FREE black ratchet straps from KTM used in bike delivery--and single use so get discarded--note--depends on your relationship with the dealer! I also use the Ortlieb "soft" bags--smaller but have stiff inserts and a rigid foam inner panel against the frames--the only issue with the Ortliebs is that the straps are too short and I've had to make up my own extensions--heavy duty velcro straps about 2 inches wide are available on fleabay--and I use waxed saddle thread to sew stuff together--now solid as a solid thing--and will offroad--the Ortliebs are much more robust for offroad--but the Lomos are fine for road trips. Spend time on the mounting and you won't have any trouble. There are other brands out there which are potentially better--but you pay for it--and have to look at how many times you will actually use it. Hard bags for the road are fine if properly made--i.e. Hepco and Becker and maybe Givi. I WOULD NOT use aluminium shit--no give, they bend, don't absorb an off, and coat everything in black on the inside. I used to have H and B Gobis on my 640A--they are double skinned and carry water in the skin--with a tap!--and are waterproof plastic--a great beer cooler at a campsite--a much better alternative to bent aluminium.

I use SW Motech soft panniers. They expand to about 30 litres each side, if needed, or about 18 litres each side in the zipped position. They are very good, in my opinion. Both of these photos were taken in the Picos in June.

I use a pair of Moto Fizz panniers that I've had since I owned my Moto Guzzi 850 mk3 lemans, and I was only the second owner of the bike, so lets say early 90's.
Still going strong after all these years and still looking good for what must be over 100,000 miles of touring in that time. These days they sit on my 250 Rally. Not sure you can get them in the UK any more. Not waterproof, but very robust and a few drybags keeps the water out of the important stuff.
