EDZ Yeti fleece or Knox Cold Killers Winter Jacket?

Post by Paul Neate »

Anyone have any experience with either or both of these two 'mid layers'?

I have a BMW GS Dry jacket and am looking for a packable warm layer for a trip to northern Norway in the summer.

Any recommendations?

Cheers,

Paul

Can't comment on either of these garments I'm afraid, but I just took a regular fleece and a cheap Decathlon duvet jacket I already had. I rode up to the Nordkapp June/July last year where temperatures were in the low 20's, so didn't need either. Even on my way back down via the Trollstigen and the high mountain roads to the south, it only dropped down to 9C. I just have a Richa jacket with removable waterproof and quilted liners, which was more than adequate.

Hi Paul,
Id personally stay away from both, compared to similarly priced outdoor gear (especially sale time) neither cut it

I have a synthetic jacket I wear as a thermal layer, when I don't need it it packs to beer can size.

No brand recommendations, they're all pretty similar (thumbs)

Having tried allsorts of outdoor gear over the years I now generally stick to "RAB" and "Under Armour".

Neither are cheap but the quality is fantastic and the stuff lasts forever.

"North Face" is good stuff too but a bit of fashion thing just now.

I believe "RAB" have an outlet store somewhere near London but I am not sure where exactly. "North Face" have an outlet in "Cheshire Oaks" near Manchester where bargains can be had and "Under Armour" have an outlet store in the same place. Well worth a visit if you can.

+1 on Rab. Something filled with Primaloft or similar, a pertex outer and no hood. Down is even warmer but a bugger to get dry and get insulating again. This sort of stuff is feather light, packs into its own pocket and is squashes down to about 1 - 2litres volume. My Rab jacket is nearly 10 years old and still going strong.

Finding space tight I make everything have more than one use.

I use a fleece jacket, instead of a layer, works very well inside the textile bike gear and doubles as a decent jacket off the bike, rolled up makes a pillow. I also use a hi viz over jacket, doubles as wet/wind protection over the bike gear and as a jacket off the bike. I always wear Kevlar jeans travelling but if it involves a long trip in cold I add a fleece pants. Doubled socks are amazing, in summer they breathe well and in winter they keep warm. I ride all year, never been cold.

All the stuff is bog standard and goes in a washing machine anywhere. Fleece is particularly easy to dry but depends on an outer windproof layer to work.

I did the Nordkapp in June 2014 , it snowed at the top :side:
Battery on bike died , and I had to ride south without my heated jacket on
Had edz base layer, a set of damart Arctic thermals, then an edz micro fleece , and a decent jumper
Was like a Michelin Man, and still frozen !!!!! ,
Gerbing heated jacket (thumbs) that's the thing (thumbs)
