It's time for a jacket count

Post by Alun »

Okay, what's hanging in that wardrobe or thrown on the garage floor. I'll go first...

Rukka Armax - for riding 99% of the time

Hein Gericke half leather half fabric - cool, cool looks for when I'm out on the pull (if the missus is reading that's a mistype)

Old school leather - for when I want to look 'ard.

Only got the one, Rev-IT Off Track.

Almost a year old and wearing quite well. So far its stayed water tight and is warm enough in winter with the thermal lining in.

I'm gonna cheat and copy and paste the review I wrote on Commuter Motorcycle Club forum yonks ago (April 2008) (and I use and still love this kit...its done about 20000 miles now and still looks new)...

I've been doing a long hunt for some new kit.  I wanted something for 3 seasons, including venty bits for summer.  On top of that I want waterproof and then the price has to be under £100 for Traaazers and <£200 for Jacquet.

Went to various places (the BMW kit is nice BTW) ended up in Hideout leather today and bought this...

Lizard
Pants in Polyoxford. Can be zipped to jacket. Water and windproof.

   * Dryway+® membrane, detachable
   * CE approved protectors can be fitted
   * Adjustment straps waist and legs
   * Detachable lower legs
   * Ventilation openings

501000  71 green pixel (New)

These fit the bill perfectly for my needs.  CE armour in the knees (hip too if you want it).  Waterproof breathable lining (removable), and the cool paert id you get to your destination and unzip the lower legs (with the armour) leave it in your top box and stroll around in shorts.

They didn't have the jacket I wanted in stock, so I've ordered it...this un here...

Jacket in Polytex. Extra reinforcements in exposed areas. Can be zipped to pants. Water and windproof.

   * Dryway+® membrane, detachable
   * HI-ART®
   * Adjustable CE approved protectors
   * CE approved Back Converter can be fitted
   * Ventilation opening in the back
   * Adjustable sleeve width
   * Ventilation openings

Sizes XS-2XL
504200 71 black/titan/green pixel

I'll report back when I get it...

Oh and the price?

£89 for the traaazars
£15 knee armour

£156 for the jacket
(£10 P&P)

That knocks Hein Gericke prices into a cocked hat

I suspect if you have a surf you will find it cheaper...I couldn't be arsed 'cos I'm fed up looking and pleased to get what I want in budget!

What's the betting its almost just as good as Rukka? And I have a confession LWR - the Rukka gear was sent to me by Goretex a few years back as we were running several adventure motorcycling features in Adventure Travel magazine and they wanted me to review it - I've been testing outdoor gear for years. So, I wish I could afford Rukka too ;)

JTS jacket, got it for Christmas last, great quality.

Sinisalo enduro suit, top quality lightweight kit.

Buffalo jacket of some origin, bought for a tenner on fleebay, but good.

And some Phillip Island jeans from fleebay, very good for the price.

The jacket isn't waterproof - its designed to let the air through after all, it has a waterproof lining to it though...this is my report back after being in monsoonal rains wearing only this kit (well, and undies, socks boots skid lid and gloves)...

***update****

First try out in heavy heavy rain...about 3 hours of torrential down pour!!

The jacket got heavy as it got wet (no surprises there really), my driving licence got soggy, as did my wallet, hanky, hand gel, visor cleaning stuff, spare earplugs, lose change, mobile phone....cos they all sit in pockets which aren't waterproof

However, I was bone dry in the jacket.

The trousers were a different story. After about 1.5 hours my groin starts to get wet. Now I know it wasn't pee, cos it wasn't warm. so my powers of deduction concluded that it was rain water. I resigned myself and continued my route. However another 40 minutes I was starting to get a bit chilly (no thermal properties with this kit) so I stopped in a petrol station to take the jacket off and add a light fleece to wear underneath. then I noticed that my trouser flies were undone!!!! Does this mean I've been walking around Wells-next-the-Sea with my undies on show ....it might actually explain why women were admiring my new beard

Anyway..it might explain my wet groin too
