BMW Sat Nav 6 and Garmin smartphone link transfer gpx files?

I currently have a Garmin zumo 396 and use my route app, download file to iPhone and send to zumo via Garmin smart link, great for changing routes on iPad and then moving wirelessly across and I don’t have access to a windows pc. Friend tried the same on a Garmin bmw sat nav 6 and wouldn’t let him do it. Is this the price of a BMW branded device as zumo model is older than Nav 6?
