If it's cold & you got your thermals on, eat some chocolate and if going to bed late have a hot water bottle - you'll get to sleep quicker

A bivvy bag as an outer sheath helps a lot.

I use an exped synmat with a cheap fleece blanket on top. The I have my down bag opened up to sleep under with my feet in the footbox. I have used this set up down to -5 and always been warm

I bought a sleeping mat for this summer because we were doing some touring. They take more space than the airbed BUT they pack a lot faster and are more than excellent.

After 2 weeks in France I was concerned 10 days here would be cold but no. I used all the same gear we had at 35c except we now had 17-22c. You spend so long looking for what works best for you and I believe in layers. So, at night, a fleece jacket and socks make excellent company. Fleece sleeping bag liner is excellent too and packs well. Close tent vents and warmer clothing.

From young my dad bought sleeping bags for camping and they were all down. We learned not to get them wet and to be honest my first memory of being cold camping was the first time I went with a fibre sleeping bag which was promptly put away again. Anything is bad when its wet so good tent and some means of keeping things dry is important.

We used the same sleeping bags camping in winter in Icelandic tents, the old metal frame camp beds keeping us off the ground and your pillow made up of your clothes rolled up neatly and placed under the sleeping bag. Happy to say those darn tents are no longer used. Guess they were called Icelandic because they were always freezing.

My cheap self inflating mattress went down..... so that didn't help.

your air bed going down wont of helped,but i have found the self inflating foam mats are a lot warmer i have a north ridge witch is almost identical to the thermorest,packs up to the size of a small rugby ball.i used that with a british forces extrem cold bag cost me about £30 of ebay really well made with a back up of a gore-tex bivvy bag at the ecky thump didn't need the bivvy.the bag is quite large when packed,but worth it. p.s your not a fat git your just big boned like me. I use a sleeping bag liner. Works really well if it very cold just pop it in sleeping bag turn a 3 season into 4 season.
