How do you charge your batteries while you're away?

Post by Freeloadeur » Thu Mar 28, 2013 6:15 pm

I'm ok charging my phone with a USB socket on my bike but does anyone know of a way to charge AA batteries from the bike, my camera eats ordinary batteries so I always use rechargeable NiMh batteries, but their charger is 240v .

I have an AA/AAA charger that uses mains or a USB lead, then I can just plug it into a USB adapter in my bikes 12V socket. Got it from 7 Day Shop for about £12.
Some of their chargers have mains, USB and 12V cigar socket plug leads.

BTW.... if you buy a charger, make sure it charges 1 to 4 batteries, instead of just 2 or 4.
As many torches and headlights now use 3 batteries.

Hi Freeloadeur,

Your battery charger may run off 240Vac but it charges the bateries using DC just like your bike battery. If it was me (and I had a spare charger) I would plug it in and test the voltage at the point where you put the empty batteries, if you were lucky it would be 12VDC. Then I would take it apart and figure out which bit was the rectifier (AC to DC converter) and remove it. I'm guessing there would be a regulator in there as well to make sure you don't blow the batteries up, simply connect your bike battery to the regulator and then I'd be good to go.

Then after I'd electrocuted my self, exploded several batteries in my face and burnt myself on short circuited components I'd probably order one of those USB battery chargers off Amazon...

Hope this helps ;)
And now, Harry, let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.

I used a 35w plug in invertor giving me 230v in my tankbag that charged my stuff up, but there are much better ways to do it as shown above :P

To recharge my batteries on holiday I like to sit on a sun lounger for most of the day, then take an evening stroll, followed by a nice meal and a couple of beers.

Did I help? :P
