FZSFazer 1000 cheap as chips ,brilliant bike
mine has had a few mods such as R6 rear shock,Ivanised,air filter and end can and just short of 140 bhp at the rear wheelie

...and I was going to mention that bike too! I had an '05 Gen 1 with the last of the R1 carb engine. Fantastic bike, slightly lethargic at the low end but once you got up into the top end of the revs it was awesome. Probably a genuine 140bhp engine rather than the R1's 170bhp version. I toured Spain and also did a self-guided touir of the Dolomites on it (1,800 miles in 5 days on that trip ). We now refer to it not as the "The Dolomites Tour" but as "The Dolomites Race"...

Our Thomas has got an FZ1 which is basically the same, great bike, rode to the stelvio and other pass's en route. Comfortable with bit of protection, and goes like stink.

Excellent post Steve. Our job is to gradually tempt bob up the horse-power ladder until he thinks a ZZR1400 might not be quite beefy enough for him....

Have a look at the older V-Strom DL1000 machines, owned mine for 13+ years and adore it.

Another thumbs up for a TDM900, owned one for over three years - outstanding machine, very under rated.

May be worth looking at the Honda NC750x ?
Depends on your priorities ... its not nearly so powerful as the bikes already mentioned as only 53bhp, but smooth, economical at 77mpg, and very safe to ride as low cog (centre of gravity) .. and fine for legal speeds .. and are you going to rag it along motorways, with all them cameras.. 80mph is easy..May struggle 2 up, but depends on fat content, lol.

It's low revving but good torque, but overtakes take a bit of time .. equivalent to a fast car, but will get blown away by more powerful higher revving bikes.

But sensible low cost touring for the more mature gentleman ?? May be considered??

Well I have bought a Ducati S4s the quick one , in senna grey with red wheels , ohlins suspension and powered by the 996 motor , I have owned and raced a few ducati bikes so it's time to re kindle the flame low miles , one owner
