I know it’s a 500 but the later engines are excellent. I’ve had 350exc’s that have done 250 hours and never needed the valves doing, fit a bigger clutch cover for a bit more oil if you want to extend service intervals a bit but they all want regular oil changes

IMHO the 450’s are horrible trail bikes, the power is brutal and they are tiring to ride. 500’s are better.

400 EXC’s are nice - I had 2 - but not as good as the 350’s.

Thanks for that and great trip on adv , what year was your 500 ?

Phil's your man for the info Bob he's had both.....rfs engines apparently bullet proof. Check out the sub frames as we know you like to take a lot of gear

This orange stuff is a bit addictive, I have been busy making a nose cone for the KTM outfit , makes it legal for actc events , just got to sort a seat now

We have a 2006 525 and 2002 350's that have done rallies and a trip around Morocco, with 13l tank range is around 120-140 miles with a mix of road and trail if not carrying luggage. The standard 9l tank is 75-90 miles local trail riding without luggage, I believe the 450 uses more than the 525?

The RFS models (pre 2007) are suffering from an increasing amount of obsolete parts these days.

The RFS has four oil filters to deal with per oil change (or every other) the latest KTM's have two and are easier to get at, I'm not sure what the up to 2010 has.

The pre 2003 KTM has a smaller front wheel bearing and it's hard to find a decent hub for one these days.

The RFS KTM's are reaching legendary status and prices have risen over the last few years, there is also a wealth of knowledge from people who have done thousands of miles on them.

We also have 2020 350 EXC's and I wouldn't consider them to be long distance trail bikes, we mostly do 120-180miles a day of mostly dirt/back roads with no luggage and end up where we started, two days of that and they need a service. I'd consider long distance to be 250-300+ a day with road work getting you to destination late in the day over several days.

With all enduro bikes road speed is compromised, I think 50-55 on the 525 and 45-50 350's as a cruising speed if you want them geared for hard going terrain and rocky climbs.

Lights are also poor and only on with engine running which was a pain our Morocco trip with the 525.

You'll also need a seat, we bolted some pvc covered foam to the mudguard. Are you doing the Torbay trial on the 11th April?

It was originally an '85 CR500 EML but now has a KTM640 motor. We've used it for trials, trail riding and hillclimbs, I'll post up any events locally we will be doing.
