I recall, 100 years ago when that XR was reviewed by Dirt Bike they debated whether kick-start was better than electric start on a big trail bike, and concluded: "Ideally, we'd like both, plus someone to come along with us who can kick-start it for us"

Kickstart is just as easy
Luckily I don’t suffer with that

You will never start it the way he’s doing it, by resting on the side stand and trying to kick it stood up
Both feet on the floor and kick through, from a firm base on solid ground

Re: If you could have one of these, would you?
he he in fairness to chris he had some tight valves in portugal and gave us some comedic moments ...hes had it ten years i think and hes a good old rider fit ex marine lad ...it would have killed me on that trip .the video was just a piss take ..as it were a real bitch to get
going hot ...oh how we laughed ...good tmes good bike good trip
its a family freind now and typical honda still needs 8 priming kicks and a letter from god but hes nailed it .....i really like it but i know its brutal on tyres ...got through thgree rears on it in 15 days ......
we were going downt the ferry and i kept gettin bits on me visor .....it were chises rear tyre spittin blocks .. hes stalled in some pretty precariuse single track and with the tight valve starting srama it was deffo a mans bike
yes id have one with the magic button ...........i had a baby baby xr in the 90s and it really was very capable little bike 25ks lighter than me crfs very managable but not so good on the road ..... things have moved on so much ? maby there is a case for the baby thrown with the bathwater
a modern xr with fi and a good gearbox circa 35hp ...theres a nice thought ..
circa 1996 poor little honda im 5 stone lighter now but was a way better rider then ...i did like beer back then .....spend me time now gettin smaller bikes and trying to defy gravity .......
big xr 6k yup id give it a good go
braaaaaaap

If I could have one of these, would you?
It's a definite no from me.
It's overweight, overpowered, a pig to start, tough on chain/sprockets/tyres, cough stalls at the worst moment and would probably be overpriced.
The Yanks may love them in their wide open spaces but in the UK there is nowhere to make use of that engine especially on our short muddy lanes with lots of gates.
Been there, done that and put the rose tinted specs back in the box.

Open your eyes and you see what is in front of you, open your mind and you see a bigger picture but open your heart and you see a whole new World.

Re: If you could have one of these, would you?
There seems to be some confusion in this thread over differing models of 650 XR's, the last of the proper XR650's was water cooled this is an "L" model with air cooled motor. It's a proper dual sport bike from years gone by, I wanted one when I bought the GS Dakar back in 2003 but couldn't find a good one and had quickly discounted the R model.
Would I buy one now, probably not after 17 years of GS Dakar ownership but if I'd bought one then I'd probably be happy to replace it with a new one now. I'd actually replace the GS Dakar like for like now if it were available and would have bought one last year instead of the G310GS.

I would. It would have to be the L though. Looking at the the Gap road in that pic I have fond memories of pulling a stalled XR600 up that slope! Why is it when you shout gun it and keep left ....they don't gun anything and go right??
