Lots in the UK had the engines take for use in 'sound of singles' or whatever that road-race series was called.

What do you reckon the maximum sensible size is for a single cylinder engine?

Yep, 'Supermonos' was still a class when I raced, and Alan Cathcart even got a European Supermono Championship series going. Plenty of big DR and rotax engines went into those little bikes.

Great minds, Brendhen (well...) - I was just thinking the same thing.

I remember Ducati did an off-the-shelf racer which was a v-twin with a de-activated cylinder turned into a balancer...or did I dream it?

A few years ago I went an agricultural show.
There was a very loud rhythmic thump thump. Coming from a group of tractors. When we found the culprit and got talking to the owner of said tractor it was a 5ltr single.

Sensible maybe not

That was a beautiful little thing. Hen's tooth. They made about 60, specifically for the Supermono series I mentioned above. Light as a feather (about 120kgs? and maybe 60bhp from 550cc). Gorgeous piece of kit.

Of course Bimota had a go too, and made a hash of it. Pains me to say that as a big bimota fan, but it's true.
