Wonder what they have in mind for that patent? Might make a decent ADV bike.

I found a pic of the Ducati Supermono engine with the 'dummy' balancing cylinder type design:

As I remember, the European Supermono capacity limit was 800cc, which is why Suzuki DR750 and DR800 engines ended up there I guess, while the domestic UK series was unlimited (i.e. <1300). Did anyone manage to build a 1299cc single I wonder? Nuts.

Another ex-racing friend of mine has a Niko Bakker frame hanging in his workshop, which once housed a tuned BB1/Rotax/F650 engine. Lovely bit of welding that is. When it was all up together and running he used to use a double-sided roller-starter to get it going, with one of his van wheels on one side and the rear wheel of the bike on the other. It was too high compression to bump it the normal way. People used to gather round it at track-days to watch the starting procedure, with the van running in first gear as he dropped the clutch and it burst into life. Bloody loud. Then they brought in tighter decibel limits and he could never get it through scrutineering.

A few years ago I went an agricultural show.
There was a very loud rhythmic thump thump. Coming from a group of tractors. When we found the culprit and got talking to the owner of said tractor it was a 5ltr single.

Sensible maybe not
One of these?

Expansion chamber exhaust, and the option of starting using a shotgun blank!
Wasn't sure until you mentioned the shotgun cartridge. But that does ring a bell

Or if you really want big "strokers" try the Lanz Bulldog.... some 10 litre models.. In cross-section drawings the Marshalls and Lanzs look for all the world like my old Li Lambretta, (apart from the rear diff ;) ).
