I remember Ducati did an off-the-shelf racer which was a v-twin with a de-activated cylinder turned into a balancer...or did I dream it?
No you didn't , I have seen one in recent times. The real McCoy (there are lots of copies) are worth a fortune now.

Had a 1918 Rudge 750cc Multi in 1972 ish a thumper, tended to break drive belts when it coughed, variable gearing as the front and back pulleys open and closed to change gear using the long handle, a manual version of the modern scooter drives.

My god that chain must have eaten some feet!
And now, Harry, let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.

It's a linked leather belt. On a long run you'd expect to have to repair it several times.

The slogan 'don't trudge it, Rudge it' must have been muttered in vein a few times.

Yep, 'Supermonos' was still a class when I raced, and Alan Cathcart even got a European Supermono Championship series going. Plenty of big DR and rotax engines went into those little bikes.

Didn't some guy cause huge upset when he rocked up with a KX500 supermoto and left them all in a cloud of blue smoke?

A few years ago I went an agricultural show.
There was a very loud rhythmic thump thump. Coming from a group of tractors. When we found the culprit and got talking to the owner of said tractor it was a 5ltr single.

Sensible maybe not
One of these?

Dunno that story, but it's certainly true that the mono rules were interpreted pretty widely. Rotax engine in a TZ frame was quite common, producing a very small light bike with instant GP-style turn-in. I was at one of the Wednesday ACU practice days once at Mallory Pk and I barreled into Shaw's hairpin far too fast on my R6, pollaxing a poor sod on his TZ Mono. All my own fault. We both ended up in the medical room and I couldn't apologise enough. Ended up buying him a new set of fairings. I hear from him now and again and he still has the bike even today. It was so featherweight he could even briefly pick it right up off the ground on his own! If you ever went to any Supermono races from that era you'd have spotted it - it was red with a big green jelly baby painted on the side!
