Ops Life threatening problem with my ATAS

Post by sexysi »

Ok. Bit of a bad title to post, but it was.

So had my ATAS for about a year now and just had my 16k service, but there have been a couple of small issues with the bike. Don't get me wrong I love riding the thing, up until about 2 weeks ago.

So about 6 months ago riding to a petrol station on my DCT and the Petrol gauge is flashing at me reading 25miles til empty. Brake at the traffic lights and the bike stalls, weird. So I assume the petrol shifted and therefore the bike stalled. Filled up and all ok.

Fast Forward 6 months to about 3 weeks ago. Started getting strange things happening to the bike, When it was hot the bike would just suddenly loose power and die!!! This happened once, so thought it was a glitch.

Had the service done, all clearances checked, plugs cool, but they don't get changed 32k anyway.

So riding again to a petrol station, bike reading 34 miles left in the tank and bike stalls mid corner.... Pull over, start up all ok.

So have a week off work and commute to work. In the morning not a blip on the bike, all ok. Leave work in the afternoon, outside temp in London was about 24 degrees. 10miles into my journey, the bike looses power and stalls. Gauge reading 104 miles left in the bike!!!

So pull over and restart, fine for 2 mins then the bike cuts out at a set of traffic lights.

Startup again and hit a bit of dual carriageway in the outside lane doing 50mph, bike cuts out!!!! On a DCT means that the bike engine brakes straight away, no verge on this stretch of road, which is the A20 in Kent opposite the golf driving range. So get over to the left to the kerb, no where else to go.

Almost get hit by 2 cars!!!

Getting really worried, cant stay here and cantt push it anywhere. So fire the bloody thing up, to try and get myself out of trouble.

Bike lasts about 3 miles and then dies again, luckily on the A20/M20 just before a BP station, so I get the bike in there and phone Honda assist.

Who get me home.

The next morning, start the bike up, its cooler now and ride it down to Maidstone Honda.

They have managed to replicate the fault and have the bike now stripped down and I have been on a loan bike for a week now.

I have reported it to VOSA as it was very dangerous.....

It now transpires that a couple of other people have had the same problem, 2 guys who were in Morocco and now Honda Belgium are investigating. And a guy on a facebook page for these bikes called John Kirkwood, who is going through the same process now with 2 wheels in Edinburgh. He also had a close call, overtaking when his bike died.

Now he has sent me photos of the internals of his bike his bike is a ATAS 6 months old and 7k miles.

He is getting all the fuel system replaced, injectors, tank, fuel pump, filter etc etc.

I just thought I would highlight this as it seems that Honda may not have cleaned out any of there Tanks, or something in the fuel system is deteriorating over time.

My bike is June 2018 with 16k miles on it. I have logged a fault with Honda, and as I say logged it VOSA. As if this does happen, depending what you are doing at the time on your bike, it could get messy.

Bike has never been off road and I use UK petrol stations, so unless they add flakes and grit and sand to their petrol in petrol stations, I reckon it has always been in there.

I also live in Kent, The other blokes, who I don't know live in Belgium and Scotland....

No way, went in when filling up with petrol.
