What make of Satnav do you use? I’ve got a Tomtom and it seems to be pretty good, I think I usually set it on ‘plan a thrill’ then just select my destination and off I go. It automatically avoids highways on that setting.
It also usually takes me on some exciting smaller roads that I wouldn’t have necessarily thought about.

I used to be a staunch map-man and always carry one with me for planning purposes but it’s jolly nice not to have to keep looking down and instead enjoy the ride and the scenery 👍

Same with Garmin
  • Toll ways
    High ways
    Unpaved roads
Can be turned on/off == OK to use or avoid.

Shortest or fastest route ?
Shortest can give some really special short cuts.
especially if combined with OK to use unpaved roads.

There is also an "adventure mode" that you can select instead of fastest/shortest route.
Than it gets really interesting.

And probably much more than I have learned to use

Best thing about riding a small easy to handle bike is that if you do accidentally forget to switch off unpaved roads you can almost always carry on without too much trouble 👍

I have an old TomTom. I don't remember it having ‘plan a thrill’ setting. But I've not used it since before Covid. Or maybe it's just too old.

Used to use a tom tom rider however moved the the Garmin XT.
Much clearer 5 inch screen and i can download GPX files with ease, i couldn’t manage it on the tom tom.

You can select windy roads on the garmin and was slimmer in size for pocket reasons.
Also you can play music through it as has a speaker via your mobile if thats usefull.

Is a better version than the garmin navigator 6 as fitted to Bmw’s being a larger screen. Fast draw down etc.

Hope that helps

I’ve recently been signed off work for a month due to PTSD. It’s quite sad really, I noticed I was getting emotional about simple things and crying easily, then I started having flashbacks and mild panic attacks. Anyway I went to my GP who has signed me off for a bit. I guess 26 years of jumping up and down on people’s chests and unfortunately losing many of them certainly takes its toll. May have to find another job where I don’t think every ambulance siren is something I need to deal with and that red isn’t my go to colour 😢

Decided to do a few things that feel good for me so I headed off on an overnight stay up to Barmouth.
It’s just a cheeky 150 miles each way but the weather was damp and roads skiddy so I was pretty glad I was on the Innova. At 100kgs it’s light enough to handle on most surfaces.
133mpg at full ups, and ran like clockwork.

Riding = Best mental therapy for me 👍

That looks amazing Chris, sounds like you need some you time, highly stressful job and sounds like you have recognised it quickly enough. Well done for that and the will power to do something about it.

Have a brilliant mini adventure!!

Although I use a Garmin satnav on the road I plan a lot of my journeys with ViaMichelin. It has a lot of useful filters and is fairly easy to get the route you want. I often use waypoints from ViaMichelin to plan a route on the Routes App on my Garmin.

You've probably saved a lot of lives in your career, Chris. Now look after your own. It's great that you have a decent employer who acknowledges stress at work and will give you some time off. If necessary yes, change job and preserve your own head - your skills, experience and training will be invaluable elsewhere.

Personally I think it's nothing to do with work. It's the strain of hanging on to all these scooters as they rip up the road. You wanna calm down... :D
