Re: Go Big and Ride Small
I know there are some very experienced riders of smaller bikes on here so which is the best type of bike for snow and icy conditions. I am thinking the type of transmission may make the biggest difference so lets assume road legal nobbly tyres but is CVT, standard gears or C90 type semi auto better in the winter snow ? Last small bikes I had were a FS1E (brilliant laugh but 40 years ago) , Yam RS100 DX (more of the same) and an MTX200 (would have been brilliant with a better rider) but never had anything with CVT or Centrifugal clutch, so how are they in bad conditions (assume rider not the most talented off roader )? Thanks in advance. Onslowe

Re: Go Big and Ride Small
Just my thoughts but full CVT isn’t ideal as you have to get the bike up to certain revs for it to move forward, when it’s slippery that may be too much on the drive…
The centrifugal clutch is a happy medium, and especially if you put it in 2nd then you can ride all day in icy conditions or slippery mud.
I had some good fun on the Monkey 125 and appreciated the gears but the wide tyres sometimes skipped around and made it hard not to get stuck in ruts. The low weight and extremely low seat made it immense fun though.
Bikes like the XR125L are very good, still very light but with better wheel size and still light enough to manoeuvre when on your own.

Re: Go Big and Ride Small
Thanks Godspeed, much appreciated. It stands to reason that the XR125 is good in these conditions, quite similar to my MTX but its interesting about the CVT. I thoughts the lack of gear change would mean seamless gaining of speed, without the gear changing possibly breaking traction and did not think about the revs required so that's a great insight. I must admit your posts about your adventures on the small capacity machines are brilliant and a breath of fresh air, please keep it up and have very well deserved Merry Christmas
