On a fast-flowing 'natural' track with a varied surface, I suspect a well-prepared 490 could at least keep up with any modern MX or enduro bike for a couple of laps.
They hold a 'twin shock' event every year a few miles from and it's great to see and hear the monster Maico's and big jap bikes make mincemeat of pretty much any obstacle, if they don't get over it they go through it! It would be great to see a modern bike going head to head just to see how much difference there would be.

I was into my proddie racing as a youngster, but a mate of mine rode a KX500 to a decent standard. I remember him saying he didn't fancy proddie racing as too dangerous, I replied you have to be kidding, at least if you come off on tarmac the other riders try to avoid you not use you as traction!

Although I had several trail and enduro bikes when I was younger, and enjoyed using them off road, truth was I was never much good, I recall taking my mates KX round Matchams practice circuit for a few laps and it seemed like a monster, huge, instant power, more noise and vibration than a road drill and sky high seat - proper bikes!

My first road legal full sized motorcycle was a Suzuki TS250ER 1979. I did own a TS185ER 1981 this was actually a better bike as it was based on the TS125 chassis so lighter, the engine was nearly as powerful and i loved the way it revved. I have ridden an RM125 1978 and a Japanese import DR250S. I now own a Suzuki DRZ400s(possibly a future classic as decent bikes are commanding silly prices at the moment)

That is just stunning. Not sure they looked that good even brand new!

Must have taken ages to source all the parts and restore everything. Amazing piece of work.

Are you going to ride it, or just stare at it in the living room? :D

Do you have a 'before' photo ?

I kind of hope that it was a real heap of shit, to make your hard work even more impressive....

I had exactly the same model, bought new in 1982 and used three weeks later in a long distance trial on the Cotswolds while I was still running it in

The plastics were bloody awful, I'm not even sure they were actually 'plastic', I replaced mine with 'Preston Petty' items , that restoration is a total credit to you 8-)

Proper old skool photo of my bike
