F800gs or Tiger 800 XC?

Post by foley »

Sorry if I being lazy and not checking the archive. I'm on my phone and haven't got much time to make a decision.
Sold the crf250l and now have an option on a f800gs 08 reg 22k miles for £3600 or a tiger 800 XC 11reg 8k miles £4500. Both have a few extras, good service history but no luggage. I'm after something for 90% road 10% trails. Good for long distances, good on fuel, ability to add luggage for not too much money. I'm 6'3" 14.5 st.
I'm struggling to make a decision. Would ideally like to spend less money but can stretch to the tiger.
Any thoughts before I dive in??

I've owned a tiger and ridden the F800. I think the F800 is the better bike (I'm 6'3, 16 st). Better fuel consumption, nicer to ride, crashes better. However, the tiger has the better engine I think but in a drop be prepared to spend a lot of money, panels break alarmingly easily in just basic lay downs offroad. You need to ride them really.

Thanks Mike, that's useful.

I won't have the time to try both, too impatient to wait

As mike said BMW better fuel consumption & nicer ride; Triumph has a hoot of an engine. I dropped an F800 twice in light spills and damaged the rad and throttle so it's a bit fragile too.

It was such a close call for me it came down to the dealer response, BMW were great, Triumph rubbish. My experience of course.

I can't agree that the BMW is nicer to ride.
It may be better off road but if the criteria is 90% ON road, the Triumph's smooth engine wins hands down over the vibey twin , which I found annoying at 70/80 mph.
I have had my XC from new over five years now and 38000 miles without a hitch, highly recommended by me !

I've got a Daytona 675 and have to admit that engine is a peach. However, I'm leaning towards the bmw, the price leaves me money to buy luggage and a few other bits

I would choose f800gs over tiger 800xc any time of the day, and night.

I'm just having this discussion with myself except with an MT-09 Tracer thrown in the mix. I currently have a 08 990 adventure and the service intervals are very annoying. Thinking of moving it on as I also have a 450 exc for off-road duties. Use the big bike for commuting mainly and days out for fun.

Nice position to be in having to make these decisions!
