400 Mile Machines... Whats your bikes record?

Post by Philiptigerrice » Sun Mar 20, 2016 8:47 am

I saw an advert this morning for RiDE magazine...

One of the articles it boasts for this months edition is a piece on bikes attempting to get 400 miles out of one standard un-modified tank.

I'm not a RiDE subscriber these days - but it prompted a thought.

I regularly ride my GSA from Greater Manchester to Dyce, North of Aberdeen.

My tank range, when I brim it to the absolute (virtually trickling over the top) top, shows a range of 375 miles - and the trip is 385, give or take. I presume that the tech that tells me what my tank range is, doesn't take into account the extra litre or so that I force down its throat...

I have no idea how the fuel meter works?!

Last month I went the long way up, up the A701 (lovely ride) and did 410 miles on the one tank. It was a soggy day, and I cruised up, one up, not much luggage, really steady, in the drizzle.

This month - I hoofed it up (69.9mph all the way sir) the motorway and ragged it about a little, and had to fuel up on route...

Whats the record you have for one tank of fuel?

Hmm - I'm doubting myself now - I think I've mashed my numbers up :pinch:

Will have to try it next time, and confirm.

I think I have over estimated the number of miles I did - its probably more like 370 miles - and there was still fuel in the tank..

Right - I'll clock it properly next time :woohoo:

Might even bother my arse to use the facilities on the BMW Nav IV and see what that says too... (thumbs)

My question remains though - whats your record for one standard tank of fuel?

My GSA800 has a 6.3 Gallon tank (not sure if that's imperial or US) with 60-70 mpg possible it theoretically could achieve 400 miles.
I've always found that when you're over-seas (notably Italy and Greece on a Sunday ) and you're running on fumes, it's amazing who much you irk out of a tank.

With a crf being my main bike these days I have no chance :P
It's a 7.7 litre tank.....The other week I put in 7.7 at the pump.

I use the Total fuel App on me phone.

My average over the past year on my KTM 950 Adventure is 46.6 mpg. My worst in that time was 41.3mpg but that was after a day off roading on Salisbury Plain. And my best was 56.7mpg and that was fully loaded on my way through Wales, but I just taking it all in and driving really conservatively.
If you reall want to know what you bike does then do the maths (use an App) after every fuel stop.

I got 337 miles once out of a tank and there was still a couple of litres left, that's from a 05 plate Pan Euro 1300, not bad for a big 'un (thumbs) It's too big to push to a fuel station so I always carry a camping fuel bottle with some petrol in - it's saved a few other people some sweaty pushing / miserable walking too :P

I tried using monitoring apps but got bored after a couple of months - enjoy the ride not the data gathering
