Having broken various BMW shaft drives in various places , over lots of years, and never broken a chain, I think that BMW have really gone too far with the paralever design. If I remember correctly back to the days when BMW were in the Dakar with twins (John Deacon et al) they completely redesigned and reinforced the shaft drive including changing the engine angle to make it more in line. Surely the point of shaft drive is low maintenance--if they need this much servicing better (and cheaper) surely to buy a chain and sprocket kit every two years anyway--and chains are much more available world wide.

To achieve a decent suspension travel the Paralever has to move through a very large radius or arc. That means a lot of wear. The old one [Monolever] pivoted at the swing arm point so the arc was very much smaller for the same suspension travel. Agreed--I guess it was all about not jacking up on accel--and they forgot the other technical issues---essentially it started with two widely spaced and protected "swinging arm" bearings and that was it-they could be of a decent size as well---didn't do the R100RS much harm--I bet 99% of riders couldn't keep up with one of these ridden properly around 100 mph !
Its a hell of a lot of lateral load combined with torque and acceleration loadings on two small needle rollers hanging out in a rather flimsy casting with not a lot of space between them--power and torque have increased dramatically--but then what do I know!! When BMW produce something quick and with low unsprung weight(WSB etc) they go with chain like everyone else!
I think I'm right in saying that a typical Dakar bike only gets through a couple of chains in the whole 2 weeks of dunes , mud, 600k days and so on. Cyril's 450 yam also produced 68 bhp --he wasn't slow!!
Shaft drive is fine for 70 bhp and touring--and then you don't need a paralever !!

Probably the worst bike in the universe, it'll break at any opportunity because of shoddy workmanship and bad German design!
That's why it's the best selling bike in it's class!
For RTW I do prefer chain drive.

Oh drat, I just sold my F800GS with chain drive and bought a 2011 plate 1200GS, it now looks like I am doomed.........

While you are by the side of the road with your final drive dripping down a drain i'll be next to you with my KTM on fire with mutiple engines bits running out of the exhaust.
Oh and my Mini at home will suddenly fall apart with shame as it's not a real mini and only made of old german tanks.
