honda 650 transalp

Post by boatman »

Hi folks
I see that there are some transalp riders on here QUESTION
I have a 650 alp What speed can you run these on the motorway for long runs , that would not harm it are they good for a steady 70mph ? for long runs
(I usually run larger bikes that dont get stressed at higher motorway speeds)
THANKS

I picked one up from Huddersfield a few weeks ago and it was happy at 85 all the way back (60 miles).
I have a vague recollection of racing for a ferry on a 600 'Alp 20-odd years ago and sitting with the throttle pinned wide open all the way from Amsterdam to Calais. Think it topped out at around a ton. Don't worry - they're exceptionally difficult to kill.

hi TRAMP
You recon they use a bit of oil at faster speeds
is it a lot? as in something that needs constant monitoring?

Well not something tto worry about..seems to be at hot temps like 26c+...not uk like at all..we did 1.5k and it needed about 200ml...I run the oil level mid way on dip stick anyway..they really are hard to kill, I do try though...

for touring single I'd run a bigger front or lowwer rear sprocket..about 500rpm lower...so 70mph is in the 5k zone.....the alps sweet zone :cheer: ...

In uk I never top up between 6k services..just abroad

You run the oil at the 1/2 way i might try that myself i have had engines that you could top up forever and a day but they use down to a level then just sit there, keep toppping up and it simply finds its,s own running level.

My 650 will do 70mph all day if you asked it .. (I have standard sprockets)

Also keep my oil around the half way mark.

Oil level : heat engine to normal running temp , stop wait 5 mins , remove dipstick / clean off... then whilst holding the bike upright (not on side stand) insert the dipstick so its resting on the threads , remove and check.

Very easy to overfill , if you check on side stand or screw the dipstick in fully.

I check every 500 miles or so , but rarely need much , mine does not burn hardly any oil , which is good .

I have done over 100,000 on my TA650, an awful lot of it up and down the M6 to work and back where I normally do about 75-80mph which is very comfortable for the rider and bike. Above 80/6,000rpm and fuel consumption takes a real dive. Mine uses so little oil its not worth mentioning and I rarely top up between changes - as per Honda schedule of every 8,000miles. The bike will cruise at 90ish, and I have done so on occasions for long periods and if you browse around XRV.org you will also find reports of people crossing Europe at those sorts of speeds for days on end. If you want to go that fast regularly get another bike as thats not what the TA650 is for. Top speed is about an indicated 105-110 and it wont be redlining in top.

Thats not at all bad clip for a 650 transalp!! i know its not what they were built for but my big bikes are out of commission at present gsa1200 wi no service time left
st1300 wi a need for a new front rotor
there,s a camping do down at the other end of the country and i was just wondering if i would damage te engine in my wee alp with a long motorway run ,it seems not if i keep it steady away!!
Thanks folks
