yesterday i bought a 2001 varadero XL1000 from a friend that was emigrating.I took it for a ride today and i must say that i am very happy with it. Now i was planing to tour around Europe on my 03 pan. Both are good bikes, but both have also seen better days. These bikes will be fully loaded and i will also have the wife on the back.. which type of bike do you think is the best the for the trip.

Both are capable bikes and will eat the miles.
If the varadero has the Honda panniers then I would go for the pan as the varadero panniers are an odd shape and you can't fit much.
The pan has better wind protection if you are doing a lot of motorway stuff.
Personally I like the varadero - but only cos I have one.

This is true AAF, no need for PMs, I'm always skulking about! (don't post much anymore in fear of a hostile response! :whistle: )
In short, my choice would be the Vara, for comfort mainly, IMHO it trounces the Pan on that front, higher seating position too for a better view.
The only minus for the Vara I can think of is the fact that the Pan is shaft driven and the weight is mostly up top on the Vata, the Pan would be easier to slow manoeuvre due to its weight being low down, especially loaded and two up.
Better fuel range on the Vara too.

Very surprised to read better fuel range on the Varadero - especially a carb 2001 version. The st1300 has a 29ltr tank and can get over 300 miles easily on a run.
Personally I would say the st1300 would be the preferable touring machine for the luggage space, fuel range, and lower down rate.

I don't ever recall getting 300 to a tank on my ST1100, but I'm probably mistaken, it was a whole ago that I owned one.
I stick by the comfort statement though.
