Yes, dedicated feed back to the battery plus the engine has two additional leads because of the isolastics.

Update, I 'phone ordered a pair of new Lucas coils from Fecked at 16:15 yesterday, they arrived today at 13:15, one hour later they were fitted and the engine started first kick
Not been out for a road test yet as it has been 'houning' down here all afternoon so perhaps early next week we will see if the situation has been rectified.
I tried this company as they had the coils in stock and I had read good reports about them. The chap I spoke to on the 'phone was pleasant, seemed knowledgable and was helpful by checking their stock level and as you have read above the service was very speedy. I think that I shall try using them again in the future;

They are good people. Do some off-road/trials stuff too...they now own the Sammy Miller parts business.
Their motorcycle dealer, Bugad Bikes, is well worth a visit...it's in a historic stableyard near Sixpenny Handley in Dorset. Lovely trail-riding (and roadriding) around there.

Greetings,
I decided to section one of the coils so that folks could see what is contained in an oil filled ignition coil.
From the outside you can see the two primary coil connections, one is for the live feed and the other connects the winding back to the battery. The high tension exits from the central tower and feeds to the spark plug. The little screw is used at production to fill the internal void with a very light oil which is used to cool the primary coil and secondary coil as they get hot when electricity passes through them.
The cylindrical case is sealed with a circular rubber seal to retain the oil; there is an insulator sleeve which wraps around the primary coil to insulate it from the metal body case; a small rubber cone which sits in the bottom of the case beneath the coil assembly to support and insulate from the case plus of course the coolant oil which has been drained off.

The 'primary' coil is a single coil of wire wrapped many times around the 'secondary' which is made up of a number of laminated strips of metal.
The HT secondary 'coil' connects to the HT output via an intermediary spring which also pushes the winding assembly against the base rubber cone in the casing..

The oil can carbonise*, making it relatively more conductive, leading to misfires or difficult strating when hot, Did it smell cooked when you opened it up?

Thats very interesting Hugh, so the secondary coil that you call laminated plates, I presume is a single wide strip of flat conductive material/insulator laminate wound into a an axial coil?, the strip must be very thin with many many winds
