Exhaust Paint

Post by Thedktor »

Morning all

Today's question, is BBQ paint better than the usual HT stuff for exhausts?

Specifically for a header pipe [HOT ! ] that is far from factory fresh though obviously I will try and get the rust off.

What's people's experiences?

Thanks :)

Probably the same stuff.

I have tried painting exhausts on a few bikes, but never with any great success, stone chips always seem to break the paint surface and let rust develop or it flakes off due to bad adhesion (maybe my fault). Mind you the last one I did was a GPZ500s in the 90's (I gave up and bought a Stainless Motad full system) so technology will have moved on. Wow, that was nearly 30 years ago......

Ceramic coating seems to be the new thing.

I would go to a local chrome plater for a price.

Depends on how much it bothers you, if you are considering a rattle can, then maybe not much. Maybe even just wrap them.

Give them a good clean up with wet and dry and then scotchbright, and treat them with anti rust. A final light smooth out with scotchbright and then paint with some VHT black--some stuff goes up to 650C. Good prep makes it last pretty well and then a bit of masking and a quick touch up will refresh the weathered areas. Works well enough on several Hondas that started with black headers.

Used this Techni UHT, bought from fleabay seems pretty durable.

I used to have an Aprilia 650 with black exhausts...the silencers took a hammering.

I used Sperex VHT paint on them every year.

The secret is to clean the surface back to bare bright metal, and dust the first coat on very lightly. then follow with 2 - 3 more light coats. Don't try for full coverage on the first or second coat. Follow the 'curing' instructions carefully.

Stove paint is also very good, I'm told.

Wurth exhaust paint is the best I have ever found
Gives the creamy satin black finish that the factory finish produced on the Yamaha RD350LC

Thanks for the comments. I used some VHT 650 deg stuff but even that seems to blister and flake on header pipes I've done in the past.

Silencers are not a problem as they don't get anywhere near as hot, or two stroke exhausts for that matter!

I did give this pipe a lot more prep than usual, sp we will see....
