Soft soldering

A copy of an article from the deep past, offered up for historical interest only.
On reading it you will see the use of blow torches and very strong/dangerous acids, which would not be used today for obvious safety reasons.
We now use electrical temperature controlled soldering irons and use cored solder containing the flux.
Sometimes you can modify the old tried and trusted methods into a new and safe approach to solve a particular problem.

I've still got my old soldering kit including solder, tallow and zinc chloride. I last used it maybe four years ago to solder an airbox on an old trials bike.

If you are out in the middle of nowhere and you have to solder something, the soldering irons are usually mains driven, I wonder if those pencil blow torches would work on petrol?
