unbelievable!--why buy new?----You can buy a really good example for the cost of a couple of services as has been said. I find it somewhat satisfying and amusing running around RELIABLY on a 1k bike where I do the servicing and any parts come off fleabay for a pittance---and the people next to me are on bikes way north of 10 k and also getting ripped off by 70 quid an hour labour--they never look happy--no wonder!--the ABR rally was a prime example--mind you, if you can afford it why not---but don't whinge if you can't--save the planets resources and make do!

All of my bikes have been self serviced apart from this one, and it's purely because the warranty is about the best you can get.

They have actually called back and have paired it down to 550 for the service so I'm not getting hit for missing the other 2 yearly services.
Still shitloads though.

The warranty doesn't cover suspension after 30k miles so thats when it's getting binned. The European breakdown cover is the best of the best though so that's a big part of why I've kept it up.

What a stupid state of things !!

Luckily people have different ideas of when and how to buy a bike.
Those that buy used should thank those that buy new.
Those that buy new should thank those that buy used.
Each needs the other.
Finance and PCP, love then or hate them, facilitate bike purchases both new and used.
Some only like a vehicle whilst it has the safety net of warranty, some are confident AND competent to do their own maintenance.
Some like low mileage bikes......what mileage constitutes a low mileage is again down to personal opinion.

The most important thing in all of this is that we enjoy whatever bike we have...for as long as we have it.

Well said OnHellas,

I bought a new 701 last year and took the conscious decision to do all work myself, I am comfortable doing the work (competence is for others to judge )
Apart from the silly prices I don't trust any dealer to do it properly, some may consider that foolhardy because of it's effect on any Warranty claims.

As somebody who spent a long time 'in the motor trade' I do get a little upset by some of the comments about being ripped off by dealers and mechanics.

The dealers have to charge higher prices simply because their overheads are so much higher than the independent repairers. As a simple example I worked part time for a dealer when I retired. We HAD to have three battery chargers - but they cost then around £4K each - plus two battery condition testers at another £600 each. The expenditure on specialist tools, the vast majority of which never got used, was astronomical too. Spare parts held in stock would buy you a lovely big house overlooking Buckingham Palace! Don't even think about the value of vehicles we had to hold in stock and the cost of storage, security, premises, etc.

99.9% of technicians are honest and hard working, extremely knowledgable and multi skilled. They have to continuously study and be re-certificated. Please, a little respect.

The simple fact is that vehicle manufacturers build their products to a price, at a build rate that provides continuity and speed of assembly. In the main they must look towards selling into an ever consuming market or the production line stops. For a short time I worked at a car factory, occasionally a carrier would jam on the track and it was cheaper to destroy a body shell than to stop production for a couple of hours. There is very little profit from production it comes from the finance deals and repeat business.

So it is all down to global economies of scale really.

If Teflon is referring to 'Big Al' of MW Motorcycles, Hyde, then plus one for the recommendation.

Good point well made Hugh but, working the other way, the slipperiness when it comes to solving problems that are clearly not just a one off can turn a positive into a big negative.

Cars, bikes, whatever are mind bogglingly complex and it’s not surprising the odd thing doesn’t last as long as you might expect but that’s when goodwill should kick in. The dealer’s attitude also means a great deal. Plus the increasing unnecessary complexity and hiding behind electronic diagnosis is not good. Audi now only have a computerised service record that indies don’t have access to so I have had to buy a fake book from ebay and get the service record filled in myself. That is control freakery.

Amazing the amount of people who don't read the posts properly.

The service was not £1000 It was £550. I've been hit for a grand because I paid the warranty as well.

And I'll be binning the warranty, not the bike ffs lol.
