Re: Semi-Synthetic oil query
A friend uses a 10/40 semi in his Vstrom, and he seems happy with it.
Interestingly,I read that the 'best' oils were the SG/SH types back in the 90's,pre catalytic? They had a higher concentration of 'anti wear' additives. But they were damaging the cats,so the levels have been reduced?
I've also read a thread, where some Professor guy in the US,tested a selection of different specific bike oils, alongside Castrol GTX. And surprisingly, the GTX compared favourably against them.

Re: Semi-Synthetic oil query
I read somewhere in an article that oil types used can be picked by the type of riding you do and how often you service and change your oil .... for people change after every ride there is no need splashing out on the dearest oils as mineral oil would be fine for a day or 2 riding as the oil isn't in long enough to degrade and thin out ...semi so syntheitic is used more for someone doing less frequent changes but so go no longer really than 5000 /6000 miles with changing and the dearest stuff would be fully synthetic but for most people this is not needed as it will never stay in long enough to give anymOre affect than the semi synthetic oils ... now I spoke to a guy from the r.a.f who spent many years fixing plane helicopter engines etc and he said the best stuff you can get on the market at the minute is a formula called zx1 this can be used in the engine and also in the fuel tank to preserve engine life he told me they used a similar product in the raf and said try it I have since tried it in my old freelancer 4x4 and wether I thought it was mentally or not the engine run sweat and since I have put it in every car and every bike and have never had an issue ...ever way what ever oil you choose seriously look at zx1 engine like oil .... i personally just use Halfords cheap as I only do no more than 4/5000 miles and then it's out not even enormous that to thin out the oils with zx1 in .... word of warning thou zx1 may void a warranty as some places seem to think it can spoil the clutch with the additives in it when it's a wet clutch ...
