GS800 cutting out.

Post by SteveW »

My GS800 was acting the goat on Sunday. Cutting out, difficult to start again, but starting eventually, only to cut out again in a mile or so.
Do we think it's the infamous fuel pump issues?
I've never had an injected bike arse about through lack of fuel, it seemed the cutting out was more imidiate in feel than a carb bike would have been.
Any ideas?

easy to check - swap the pump with the other 800 you have and see if it replicates

Do you have access to an OBD code reader?

I'd be surprised if it's the heat issue with the fuel pump - unless you're abroad somewhere. Mine has this problem but only on really hot days here - i.e. high 20's to low 30 degrees.

Reminds me that I need to change the fuel pump on mine in anticipation of a hot summer :)

Sidestand switch?

When I had a pump go wrong, it wouldn't start pumping (usually first thing in the morning). Once started it was ok. Do they go wrong while you're riding?

Remember my WR250R in the heat last summer!--the pump was effectively seizing due to heat soak. The key is to listen when you turn the key on--normally you can hear the pump build up to pressure--no sound means no pressure.

It was in slow moving traffic (Is there any other kind in urban England?) it was about 14 Deg, I did feel heat from under the seat on my left thigh. But 14 Deg isn't warm!
I'll do a local loop tomorrow and see if it's still playing silly buggers.
If it persists I'll take it somewhere with a code reader.

I had an issue with a blocked fuel breather pipe. created vacuum in tank and kept cutting out (guess similar symptoms to fuel pump). If there's a "woosh" when opening petrol cap could be this? think you can access breather pipe from petrol cap

No good on a BMW,they use their own diagnostic platform
Swap the fuel pump controller or make up a bypass lead to power the pump,
To confirm.
Having a bypass lead or spare fpc is good idea anyway if you are venturing off the beaten track (thumbs)
Edit, check your battery leads before you get too stuck in ;)
