Numb thumb

Post by Hoggyf »

Had this with both my last 2 bikes, my throttle thumb goes numb after about 2 hrs riding, pins and needles type numb.
Current bike is gs800, tkc80,s hyper pro 50mm lowering springs, 20mm bar risers, last bike was a transalp700 on conti trail attacks. Heated grips don't seem to make much difference and different gloves haven't helped either.
Wonder if its cos I'm a short arse and stretching a little to the bars??
Also any suggestions fr cold feet, nowt I've ever tried makes any difference

Previous injury? I broke mine in a bike crash 15 yrs ago and if I put it under pressure it still aches...otherwise most likely problem is that you are gripping too hard...maybe try and relax your grip?

I've suffered this on occasions.
Spend some time making sure everything is set the best for you, handlebar and lever position etc.
Worth trying a crampbuster, I use one, lets you relax your hand when the need arrives.

keeping your core (trunk) warm will stop your body from shutting off the blood flow to your extremities thus keeping hands and feet warm, may help with the numb thumb too.are you wearing a technical base layer? if not try one, they work wonders

+1 on the cramp busters, they're good but can take some getting used to.

I use foam grips on all my bikes, theyre fatter and cut the vibrations down a lot. Sometimes its just how thick the grips are and it messes with your hands, I know it did on my dommie (thumbs)

Cores lovely and warm with my new jacket (thumbs) but I get this in the summer too so don't think its core temp, also the cold feet thing has been like that as long as I can remember and doesn't matter where or what I'm wearing ie not just on the bike, can have it it the car or van with the heater on!
Don't think I'm gripping too tight but may be? Tend to do most of my riding on quiet back roads so up and down the gear box and steering as opposed to long distance.

Cold feet and numb thumbs sounds like you have a circulation problems  bit left field but I use machine gloves as they have padded palms and are light with a good fit, micksea is spot on about keeping your core trunk warm, Aldi has some good base layer stuff, better than the branded stuff  as this allows heat to the circulate (thumbs)

I had a similar problem which was eventually diagnosed as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. A 15 minute surgical procedure under local anaesthetic and the problem was cured (thumbs)
