Help with Front and Rear swing arm gaiters on 05 GS

Post by Milo Tighfield »

Hi

I've noticed the front gaiter has split and the rear is cracking, can anyone recommend anyone to carry out this work in the Northwest (Lancashire or Manchester area)

I'm not sure if I could do this myself.

cheers

Adventure Bike Warehouse replaced mine (1200GS) last year, not an easy job yourself. Highly recommend ABW.

I have done some research (which I should have done first I suppose) on other forums and decided to take on the job myself, all the parts have been ordered and it's the only way I will learn, also ordered some replacement SS fixings and fasteners. (thumbs)

I'd be interested in seeing how this goes. It strikes me as being straight forward enough.

its pretty straight forward ,some tips
when you remove the lower bolt on the final drive you need to heat it up with a heat gun ,it needs to be over 100 deg, sometimes they can be a real pain ,if you damage the fastener you will have real hassle,so assume it is going to be tight/with loctite.
that said some come undone no prob :silly:
the same applies with the lower shock bolt, but if you round out that bolt you will have a whole new world of pain and expense
get it hot ;)
lastly, start putting a releasing oil on the lh swing arm pivot, this is the threaded one with the lock nut.
the trunion is anodised alloy and can corrode and have a load of crap between the frame and swingarm, get it clean and soaked here, then when you undo it there is a lot less chance the threads will pick up and get damaged.
if you do it this way you should have no bother (thumbs)

Thank you for the tips, I must admit I'm no mechanic and would rather pay for someone else's expertise with doing something like this. Oil and filters I could live with but as I cant find anyone I will have to give it a go.. (Well apart from paying the dealer that is)

Big thanks to mikeyboy for the tips. (thumbs) (thumbs)
