Hi guys got the chance to buy a Husky TE610E for about £500 (thumbs)
trouble is it won't start :S I am told it turns over but won't fire so good chance of electrical problem
I am a competent amateur mechanic and just wondered what you guys thought
a) is it a good bike for greenlanes etc
b) is it potentially a good deal?
c) what could be worst case scenario price wise

I was stupid enough to get rid of a DR350 so I could buy one of those.

Difficult starting is normal...it's down to the utterly useless carb, which was fitted with the wrong jets in the factory.

The electrics are bad too, mine would blow fuses for no reason.

The airbox has the intake at the bottom: a puddle will stop the bike dead.

It's such a shame because on paper the bike is well spec'd, if a little heavy.

It handles well on the road, and even the headlamp is much better than you'd expect.

A great concept, let down by poor detailing and production.

Also, in spite of having two oil pumps the engine life is short, parts are expensive and will be increasingly difficult to get hold of.

what sort of year is it
i bought one of these in a box of bits about 12 years ago it was a year old
i paid 500 quid for it then it cost 700 quid in bits to put right so it ended up a cheap bike as it was only a year old

i would say a non running huskydog should be around 200 quid
it could be anything from a knacked plug or coil down to a knackerd crank

theres a guy in wales called "talasin racing" i think ,hes good for spares

I think some of the guys have been a little unfair. I love the big Huskys.

Mine starts first kick - every time. It pulls like a steam train, the airbox opens to the side of the bike behind the carb (perhaps the air intake position depends on year), and I've had no electrical problems.

I've raced Huskies since my 1975 CR250 two-stroke, and have owned quite a few one way or another.

The one I own now was ridden around the Isle on Man to follow the TT off-road, and never missed a beat. It is one of my favourite bikes.

More positives: there is a fantastic Husky breaker who sells almost anything - and at low prices (so you don't need Husky Sport). Also I have three big boxes of bits that I've collected over the years including a carb, barrel, head, swing arm, and even a frame. If you need any parts do let me know.

Now the only bad bit: after fracturing my left tibia, displacing my patella and damaging my cruciate ligament while riding in France a month or so ago I'm finding the left hand kick start a 'challenge'. I could do without getting off the bike each time I want to start it. I'm also broke. So if you want a running 1998 TE610 with tax, MOT, and three boxes of bits £750 would buy mine.

Otherwise I'm happy to help you by sending you any parts I have, and finding out the details of that breaker.

Cheers

Mike

'a) is it a good bike for greenlanes etc'
its no lightweight enduro bike granted, but it's no 200kg heavyweight either.
Longish wheelbase so stable, ~160kg, 6 speed box so road in between trails is not buzzy or slow, grunty motor and alot of fun, small 9L tank so lucky to do 100miles before filling up. Lowish seat height compared to alot of other trail bikes out there, so handy footing it when in ruts.

'b) is it potentially a good deal?'
Maybe ...

'c) what could be worst case scenario price wise'
How long or short is a piece of string - no compression - valves, rings, maybe rebuld required £500+, stator £200?, cdi £150, regulators £50, battery £50, top end camshaft rollers(check if valve clearances are consisitent), spark plug/coil/lead

By the way I've just bought another Husky TE610E so I am a little biased (lost count how many I've had) so now have to decide if I keep my new Husky or sell my DRZ400 ....

Good luck, if you go for it.
