battery upgrade

Post by Tyrant68 »

The battery on the 640 is starting to give up the ghost, had to kick start her the other day after a run that had heated grips and headlights on for a while and again early hours of this morning after being stood outside for 11 hours.
All I get from the starter is a 'ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ' sound.
Though the old bat started straight up after being left overnight
Grips are now more in use as are headlamps and satnav through the hella plug.
Would like to invest in a pair of spotlamps and a t-piece so I can run a heated vest,
So whats the best battery to upgrade to?
Loads on Ebay around the £25-40 mark. KTM want £98 for a standard one :woohoo:
recommendations please :)

Go to a Honda dealer, they seem to have some tie up with Yuasa.

I recently picked up a battery for my Husky for around £40 instead of the £70+ that Husky wanted for the same battery :)

hi,

check first if the battery is charged properly and if there are any parasitic loads, when the bike is of.

I don't see the point in buying the 100 quid battery. Check your local autofactors, all of them should be able to order motorcycle battery, as all the suppliers are the same for small retailers.

Thanks Gav and V_King.
I could understand her not starting after being left in yesterdays monsoon for all that time , but sunday she had just done 80 odd miles then left for 4 days before starting again.
Will check tomorrow to see if terminals are fine etc.
Re new one, Is it possible to get a higher spec one that'll take more load?

I don't know your bike specifically, but I put a larger capacity battery on my old 400EXC and it fitted and worked fine.

After you've put a meter across the terminals of the battery when the bike is running and you've got ~14 volts ish then look for a battery that has slightly more cranking amps, a few drz owners upgrade to these lithium batteries from the states, half the weight of a standard one, but they do have their cons, I don't think they like certain conditions which I can't remember what they are tbh.

Yuasa and MotoBatt both seem to have a good reputation.
It seems to be the case that batteries that are no longer in the first flush of youth (!) become more sensitive to the cold - like me, really. So a battery that's been fine all year will misbehave after a night or two outside in the cold. It's often the first sign that a battery is due for replacement.

British weather??

ive just bought a Yusa for £35 delivered off ebay. Ive let my current battery drop to 12v to many times, so now a week stood still in the cold and it doesn't really like starting.
