Continue towards Caleta Gonzalo.
The ferry from Caleta Conzalo was supposed to leave every day at 1 PM. And you should be at the ”terminal” 2 hours before that. So I planned to ride there, buy a ticket and camp until the next day. The road was gravel. Good to start with. But the last 14 km were bad due to ongoing road work.
When I arrived at the terminal, they told me that they do not sell tickets there. Only on line and they do not have computer. Or in Chalten, 65 km back!! It was 3 pm, a boat was arriving and vehicles waiting in queue. The guy that told me about the ticket also told me that I could take this boat. Leaving in 30 minutes. He requested me to give him my passport. Wait and then pay direct on the boat. OK. Of course I did that. No return trip to Chalten
No camping in Caleta Gonzalo.
Pictures shows the road to Caleta Gonzalo and the ferry that I used.

To Hornopieren
The boat trip was spectacular. Even it took another route than the ”normal” ferry.
It went more out on the sea side. That avoid using to ferry rides with a short ride on land between.
It arrived in Hornopieren at 8:30.
At 10 PM the tent was ready.
It was a very long day.
3 planned days in one day.

To Puerto Montt
This was an easy and smooth ride. Beautiful. I was in Puerto Montt early.
I could pitch the tent. Take an easy day and think of the trip on Carretera Austral. A fantastic trip. So much spectacular things to see.
It was like riding in a painting. And a new "wow" many times.
Memories for life. I was even lucky with the weather. Only 2 rainy days.

Re: South American tour
Eric, thanks for the write up.
My wife and I are heading down to the Carretera Austral. We are in Costa Rica at the moment but hoping to get down to Villa O’Higgins by March/April before the weather breaks.
Your photos are spurring us on

Re: South American tour
Sure.
This is why a tent is worth to carry.
I would have loved that. But I had to adopt to schedule and administration for the ferry.

Re: South American tour
Thanks. It was like riding in a painting. Wow! WoW ! Wow again...
I used this guide.
Focus little too much on accommodation and restaurants. But...

Getting old now but I see that new version is to be released next year

Siete Lagos 1
Back in Argentina and the area Siete Lagos.
An area that I only touched earlier
Now I traveled "Camino de Siete Lagos". From south to north.
Fantastic.
Blue lakes, Green forest, twisty tarmac roads and beautiful mountains. Wow.....

Siete Lagos 2
This part was so wonderful that is worth 3 more pictures.
The first one shows the last lake, Where the city San Martin de los Andes, is the end on the camino.
That city was very focused on outdoor activities, Hiking ++ now and skiing in the winter.
All lot of well trained young people. Nothing for an old man that has ended is running carer many decades ago....
That picture is taken close to where I was camping. By the lake.
Carretera Austral and Comino de Siete Lagos.
Feels like.....full of impressions. No room for more
Is there a short way home?
No!!
