Touring The Highlands in January CAN be fun.

Post by prooney377 »

Just a quick post on the forum to show that with the right kit and the right frame of mind a trip to the Highlands in January can be fun. Me and my mate Mo went for a week and the weather was cold and the roads empty. The only problem we had was that there were not enough daylight hours.......but you can't have everything.

The plan was to leave early and to be fair we were packed up and ready by 11am.

However our eventual departure was delayed when, after fuelling at the local garage one of Jason’s new pannier lids fell off and we spent an hour retracing our route to look for it. When we did eventually find it the inevitable had happened and judging by the damage approximately 143 vehicles of varying sizes had driven over it. Nothing a few straps couldn’t sort out though.

So amending the plans to stay off the motorway we made up some time before stopping for a break at Devils Bridge in Cumbria.

Must have been three o’clock by the time we left the bridge and headed off north, alternating between the North York Moors and The Lake District. We stopped off along the way for a photo opportunity before stopping for the night in Appleby.

I'll just let the photo's do the talking now.

Gets a bit cold of a morning....

Skye Bridge just before we were moved along by the law. Notice the car coming towards us in the background. They actually came back round just to check we were moving on.

Just a quick note about the pannier lid, it was my own fault, nothing to do with the panniers which were brand new, chalk that one down to experience.....always double check the panniers are locked

If I had to choose somewhere to live the area around Fort William, Spean Bridge would be tops, BTW, I am a Laird of Lochobar and I invite anyone to stay on my land**

**Best advise if staying; is to stand perfectly still as it's only a meter square.
The end of the road is the start of the fun
