Bulbs in France

Post by Rayzo82 »

I am considering a last minute trip to Normandy in January, having looked at what I need to take to comply with there laws it suggests spare bulbs. My bike lights are all sealed led units so this is not possible. Just wondering if I was to get pulled would I be in trouble? Is it worth taking a random emergency kit and trying to blag it?

You would be very unlucky if you got pulled. Just take a few spare fuses and a few essential tools. Don't worry about it.

I suspect the gendarmes are looking for a packet of spare bulbs, amongst other things, sos you are complying with their laws, .. I doubt they will check that they actually fit?

You've left it late for crocus...maybe some daffs for next year?

Always take the same Halfords spare bulb kit whether I’m biking, driving or motor-homing. Guessing they’ll never check.

With twin headlights and (OEM) LED brake and rear light assembly I'm unlikely to loose a bulb that needs to be replaced at the roadside so I don't bother. I do throw a couple of spare fuses in with the tools.

Very unlikely you’ll get pulled over for a random check unless you’re doing something stupid which attracts the Gendarmes attention. You need a hi viz gilet, UK sticker and all your papers but otherwise I wouldn’t worry too much.

As far as my research went, it is a recommendation not mandatory.

I’ve never been pulled anywhere in 50 years on a bike, but I did whilst driving my Citroen ZX with my family aboard in La Rochelle, and on the same trip, by UK Customs on the way out…

Going to France for many years and never been stopped/checked etc. I always have spare bulbs in the car or bike. I use a Richa Hiviz over jacket and that solves it.

But you will get done if you dont wear gloves! You can wear crocs, shorts, you name it. But you must have gloves.
