I like Ile de Re 8-) . When we have struggled to get reasonably priced accommodation on the island we have stayed across the bridge in La Rochelle which only adds on about 20minutes in the mornings plus there is a big underground car park there which is good for bike security.

Well, for those who may be interested, a brief update....
We've worked our way through The Ardeche and Haute Provence into Italy, along a bit of the Med coast and up to Lake Como where we stay with friends who by luck have a place here 🙂
Mostly still using lovely, traffic-free secondary roads. Highlights?.... I guess the Verdon Gorges and Route Napoleon, in fact I yearned for a solo bike at times!
Lowlights? Getting across Milan on their incredibly busy ring road system - stay clear of this!
Still not used the tent - campsite shacks are very appealing with their own shower and bog!
