Breakdown cover for older motorcycles

Post by Peirre »

My triumph is coming up to 16yrs old and I’m looking for breakdown cover for UK and European trips. I’m aware that most of the major companies won’t offer cover for bikes over 15yrs old. It’s currently tagged on my green flag policy that I have for the car, but come 1st May it will no longer be covered. Can anyone tell me of any companies that will cover my bike.

TIA

+1 for Carole Nash
(not sure if you can buy the breakdown cover from them separate to the insurance cover, but as has been said their insurance policies include it).

I had a bad experience with CN several years ago when I was stranded in the French alps and CN’s agent (the AA) refused to recover the bike, it took me 6 weeks to calls and emails before they conceded their mistake and repatriated the bike.
I also found that their combination of insurance and breakdown cover was hugely expensive compared to buying them separately

Quick update
Brittania/LV have quoted me £142 for uk and European cover for 1 vehicle.
I’m currently with green flag for the car with their personal cover which covers me for any vehicle up to 15 years old, which means that from may the bike isn’t going to covered by the personal cover, green flag have sent me the renewal for £77 for UK personal cover. But with a little rejig and ditching the personal cover and putting the cover specifically for the car and adding UK and European for that they’ve quoted £82, they have said that they will add cover for the bike but only for the uk only, taking the total to £143. With the limited amount of use of the bike I’m doing I’ve no plans for taking it out of the uk, and the only European trip planned this year is in the car

From Ireland I am insured with Carol Nash and have comprehensive cover on 4 bikes [varying 26-39 years old] for just over €300 90-100bhp. It also includes legal fees cover which I have had to use.

That includes business use [self employed], pulling a trailer on two of them, EU wide cover and EU wide Breakdown Cover on all 4. Separately I pay €52 top up on my health insurance for world wide travel cover for which you must also have the EHIC card.

Bikesure have no restrictions on the age of the bike. I asked recently pre European trip. It's flux rescue, an optional add on to the policy.

Whoever you chose for your EU breakdown cover, make sure you read and understand the policy wording and don't just read the Product Information Document.

I'm sure we all know that if the cost of repatriating your bike is more than the market value then they will not bring your bike home. What you may not be aware of is that some of these companies calculate the market value of your bike by taking its estimated value then subtracting the estimated repair costs to come up with the current market value. It is this value they use to decide if its worth repatriating or not.

As an example, say your bike is worth £1800 but the garage estimate £1200 for repairs, then your new market value is £600 and if it's going to cost more than this to bring it home then its not going to happen; and you won't get it brought far for £600!

Make sure you read the actual policy document so you know what to expect should the worst happen!

Autoaid, it covers cars, vans, motor homes bikes trailers and caravans all on one policy. We pay about £70 a year because out bikes are over a certain age.
