New ferry to Norway

Post by qcnr »

This could save a bit of riding to get to Kristiansand, Norway.

Yes, I know it is in Norwegian, but let google do the magic. :-)

That's a really useful new route. Kroner exchange rate is about 0.1 to the Euro, so that's about 200-250 Euros each way. And it gets you to a good starting place to do the west coast fjords.

I think that's just gone on to the bucket list...

Eemshaven to Kristiansand - does this save any time or money over using the roads?

Not much of a different route vs using the road through Denmark and then ferry from Hirtshals

Strange route ... shame about the old Harwich to Esbjerg ferry which was a good one

Not really, it does save about 600km of boring motorway driving and a 2.5 or 3.5 hour ferry crossing.

However the timings make this route beneficial. From Hirtshals to Kristiansand there are only 4
sailings per day (2 companies). About 12:00 and about 20:00. So if you left the UK to catch the ferry from NL, but
intended driving up, you would have to leave very very early to be in Hirtshals by latest 18:30. Or you would
need to stay overnight somewhere, effectively losing a day. Taking the ferry from NL you arrive at
09:00 the next day fresh ready to hit the road. The earliest you can arrive in Kristiansand from Hirtshals
is 14:00 by taking the Fjordline ferry at 11:45

I went along the west cost of Denmark a few years back and enjoyed the scenery
Interesting sand dunes/beaches and a sandcastle competition ... but we had time to smell the roses
More of an internal A road on the way back but again enjoyable ... forested scenery

In July 2016 returning from the NordKapp, I rode the Oslo to Hamburg section in one hit using the Helsingborg to Helsingør ferry, and the Rødby to Puttgarden ferry. Made for a long and not that interesting a ride. Somewhat cheaper though, but can’t now remember by how much.
Didn’t pre-book either, just rode up and rolled on.
