What if.

Post by Dark Knight »

We rode over to the continent for two to three months.
When we ride over, most of us would normally spend only two to three days at the most in one place.
What I am suggesting is that we spend weeks at the same place, this is so that we can fully explore the area, get to know the people and improve our language skills.
If we spend weeks at the same place we should be able to reduce the cost of accommodation and get really organised.

As you may suspect there is a hidden agenda, in this Country we are heavily taxed and due to the virus, we have the prospect of possible tax increases on travelling/living expenses.
What we are doing is making preparations in case we have to bail out of the country.

Some people with money have two houses, one here where they spend four months in the summer and also a place abroad where they spend the rest of the year.
They are well placed to move if the situation becomes unbearable.

As the man said Be Prepared.

Are you not forgetting the little matter of a possible no deal Brexit in 7 weeks time in your cunning little plan?

Due to brexit, UK visitors to the EU will be treated as ‘third-country nationals’ with full effect from January 1, meaning they will be subject to the rule of staying no more than 90 days in any 180-day period. No different to an Australian visitor, a Bangladeshi or a Zambian.... The old freedom to roam around for extended periods without special visas is about to be torn up.

As with other third-country citizens, UK passports will be stamped with the date of entry and exit so border officials can check they do not overstay.

So basically you can kiss goodbye to the freedom to settle in another EU country in the same way you could before, or even spend long periods away travelling or on retreat. And as to taking your dog with you, even for a few days - unless you have 4 months and lots of money to spare beforehand, don't even think about it.

Great this Brexit lark, isn’t it ?

Add in the need to get vaccinated against CV19 before you are allowed to travel and enter a foreign country in 2021

Travel in 2021 is going to be a PITA-especially with added costs and complexity

Passport stamp my ass... Have you actually left France.... There hasn't been border control for years and the UK customs don't give a fuck....

The biggest problem will be your UK vehicle insurance won't be valid for long durations and the foreign police will check if you have a accident.. You can obviously get round any off this by hoping on a flybe or easyjet back to UK for 24 hours... Simple...

What actually happens at end of December 2020 hasn't been agreed...

Enjoy your trip and you will find 2021 a very complicated year europe isn't the same anymore... Its been hit hard like the UK for those that haven't been this year....

I've been in and out frequently and it changes every month.... But they still smile lol...

It will be what it will be.
Nobody yet knows how things will actually work out even those in charge. If the EU and the UK want an equal and purposeful relationship they will make it happen BUT first they will need to stop the language of win or lose.
There will always be options and choices when people have a mind for opportunity.
Open your eyes and you see what is in front of you, open your mind and you see a bigger picture but open your heart and you see a whole new World.

Russ, for someone who travels regularly, I'm surprised you haven't been following the impending changes. Perhaps because I'm an emigrant I've paid more attention to it. The reason that UK travellers have been waved through without border controls for so many years is precisely because the UK has been an EU member. We all know this. Border guards haven't given a fuck because they haven't had to. Until the transition period ends in 5 weeks time, that is. On the EU principle of free movement of goods and people, there has been no need to scrutinise the movements of people between member states and even the Schengen arrangement border has been very loosely policed. But not for people with non-EU passports. They have always been subject to checks, passport stamping (and/or electronic records for chipped passports), and usually a different queue at points of entry. This is just an undisputed fact.

From Jan 1st, all UK travelers to EU countries become 'third country nationals'. Those who voted for a tory hard brexit will presumably be happy with this and will have got what they wanted, because it was an inevitable consequence of their vote. Why they wanted to make everyone's life much more difficult and inconvenient I don't understand, but that's the result. Sadly everybody has to suffer from the decision they took.

Anyway, back to Dark Knight's original post... You'll be OK if you plan a trip of no more than 90 continuous days away, but not the extensive stay you were talking about. And remember you won't be allowed to return to the EU for another 90 days once you have gone back to the UK. And if you ever want to spend much more time in an EU country, you'll need some sort of a residency or work visa via the relevant embassy. It's all in the Withdrawal Agreement and on the gov.uk websites.

Daveuprite has explained why Nigel Farage was so anxious to get a German passport for himself, and also why many of my friends in NI quietly got themselves RoI passports a year two back.
All this was explained 'before the vote' but dismissed as project fear by those who thought we could have out cake and eat it.
