Your Best Touring Set-up

Post by SteveW »

I've had some great trips.
But I'd say my three favourite things are campervans (Not really great big motorhomes) motorbikes and push bikes.
About Four years ago me, my wife and the dog did a great European month long trip with our T5 camper, GS1200 and push bikes.
I've still got the wife, the trailer and a dog but sadly the camper and the GS have gone now.
But hopefully in about two years we'll have a similar set up.
What's your favourite touring set up, just a bike or are you greedy like me?

Actually, I've remembered on that trip the dog didn't come.

Just the bike, but overladen as just can’t travel light. Although currently thinking of a T5 or 6 in the near future.

Travelling light for three weeks in France, like this, but could have carried on for months. I was hotelling it. Camping kit ads 6 kg, to the 8 kg and needs my larger Tank Bag :D

And this was for a camping weekend, tank bag not required

And this is all my kit

There's a real knack to packing light.
I've paired down my kit over time, after years of over-packing.
I found ex-military lads are the best at packing light but covering the essentials.
Camping kit always doubles my load, so especially if I'm out in Eastern Europe I use the plentiful and cheap hotels.
I suppose I'm a bit weird, I like the two extremes.....camper, trailer, wife, dog, motorbike, pushbikes etc.....or light bike minimum kit.

As well as touring on my bike I do a lot of hillwalking and wild camping so I know all about travelling light but I'm now a convert to a trailer after doing 4k miles this summer to Norway. The luxury of being able to carry a decent sized tent, double airbed, comfy chairs, bbq etc. (not to mention enough alcohol for 10 days in Norway :)) far out weighed being limited to about 70mph on the motorways. The rest of the time I hardly even knew it was there.
