Hi folks,
wife and I are finally going on a bike holiday...health allowing!!
We have 1 week and looking at landing in St Malo from Portsmouth.
Options are West Coast or Loire. I've been to the Loire and it's nice, scenic etc.
Any views on the West Coast side? Suggestions of nice routes and places to see?
Thanks in advance
France - West coast

Okay...from rochefort take d125 road to port des barques and isle de madame (thumbs) ..then back roads to the bourage..great naplionic fort and village then to marrenes and over the bridge ...oyster bed views and to tremblade and d25 via coubra...great road to la palmera ..follow coast road along gironde estuary...great days ride with lots of food and drink stops...
From niort follow tourist road west via mari potovin...aka green venice...end the day in la rochelle by the 2 towers at harbour B) ...
Enjoy stay off the motorways and the tourist offices are excellent...im passing through 1st week june enroute to pyrennes..
Bon journee avec au moto

Going toward Nantes St Nazaire and the WW2 submarine bases are interesting, also the bridge over the Loire and you can then head over to Pornic and eventually Isle de Noirmutier. This is rather nice, then along coast heading toward La Rochelle where you pass many water towers on the way some of which are open to visit and have spectacular views from the top. I think it's Talmont St Hilaire has a rather nice motor museum.
Royan, ferry across from there and down coast and around towards Bordeaux. Some really lovely villages there, Claouey, Le Petit Piquey, not to mention Cap Ferret [spell with second e, not a] lighthouse [phare], Pyla dune and so on is magical. The perimeter of that whole area is lovely and really nice bike roads, not fast so you can travel lightly dressed.
St Jean to Cognac to Angouleme is a nice bike road and an excellent municipal camp site at Cognac.
Could be rather warm, we have had 35C in early June so worth looking at how you will handle heat rather than cold. Layers are best. BUT it can also rain and as they say it's not rain as we know it.
I would think in June you can just wing it if you are camping just make sure to arrive not too late.

Did a lot of that recently on way back from Pyrenees- sadly they have shut road in front of La Rochelle cafes near towers but plenty of bike parking spots in town.Tramp wrote:Okay...from rochefort take d125 road to port des barques and isle de madame (thumbs) ..then back roads to the bourage..great naplionic fort and village then to marrenes and over the bridge ...oyster bed views and to tremblade and d25 via coubra...great road to la palmera ..follow coast road along gironde estuary...great days ride with lots of food and drink stops...
