Spain nil Scotland won

Post by Flintlock »

So, eventually got round to starting this ride report. The initial plan this year was to go to the Pico's in Northern Spain, but thanks to the Covid19 this was postponed until next year. So plan B was deployed and on Monday 31st August , three of us boarded the 07.30 ferry crossing from Belfast to Cairnryan for a week in Scotland.

The weather on departure was looking good

A pleasant crossing with calm seas, and after 3 hours we were riding off the ferry at Cairnryan. A right turn out of the port and unto the A77, where after about two miles further along the road towards Stranraer , we took a left turn onto a single track un-named road that soon had us heading up into the scenic wild moorlands of this part of Scotland.

The road continues upwards and alongside Penwhim Reservoir, before heading for the village of New Luce, a left turn over the river and another left into the Main Street, out of the village, and its soon back into the remote & beautiful Scottish countryside heading towards the village of Barhill.

At Barhill, its a right turn onto the A714, and after a few miles a left turn into another great un-named road through more woodland and moorland following the signs for Glentrool and Straiton.

At Straiton we make our way back onto the main A77 and re-join it just south of Ayr, continuing North to catch the Dunoon Ferry.

If you are not in a rush, then this is a nice wee detour to take instead of the usual left out of Cairnryan and sticking to the A77 up to Ayr and beyond.

So, off the ferry at Hunters Quay and a right onto the A815 and along the shore of the beautiful Loch Eck, follow to the end and a left onto the A83 - all great roads, surrounded by great scenery . We follow the A83 to Inveraray, where we stop to purchase some supplies for our overnight wild camp.

So, onward on the A819, north out of Inveraray, follow to the end and a right turn into the A85 then a left into the B8074, a great road that follows the lovely River Orchy. We soon located a suitable spot for our first overnight stop, a nice area right on the bank of the river.

Soon the tents were up and a fire lit

Cheers Colin, yes, considering the year we were very lucky to get away on the bikes.

So Tuesday morning and the weather was still holding, so after a bit of breakfast and a coffee we packed up our gear and continued north along the B8074 to its end were we turned left onto the well tried and tested A82. It was early morning so little traffic and a great time of the day to enjoy this road.

A wee detour down through Glen Etive - stunning area

Back up the road to rejoin the A82 and an enjoyable run down to Glencoe, where we stopped for a bite to eat.
